I like fantasy, or something with a bit of action. Common novel's tend to get too much on my nerves for me to read them. I really like book with good, solid imagery and a good story line ( the A Great and Terrible Beauty books are the best examples). A good love story - that's not too mushy, but sweet instead - doesn't go amiss either. I'm very fond of endings that leave you thinking, or that are bittersweet, or are open (as in, there could be a continuation, but it's not made definite).
I also like humanistic characters. Mary sues can be fun from time to time when you don't want to overwork your brain, but I love the characters I can really relate too.

I love intrigue, backstabbing- physical or social, mastermind-behind-it-all types of characters and plots. Generally, I also really like characters who have strong or very individual personalities, generally regardless of what kind of personality that is (I've liked characters that were anything from bloodthirsty to stoic to totally fucking crazy). Well-applied irony, deep messages or thoughts, and beautiful men also make me deliriously happy.

Vampires are a guilty pleasure, but I like well written, well developed vampire books. For example, I really enjoyed Sunshine, by Robin McKinley.

Since no one has mentioned my favorite poet yet I'll start with poetry: Emily Dickinson I'm not especially sure why I like her so much but I just love her stuff. I'm more of a science fantasy writer (more on that later) than a poet so I'm not really well informed on the parts of poetry. Sorry.

As for books (which make up far more of my library than poetry.) I like science fantasy above all else. I know what you're thinking, but no I don't mean science fiction. I like fantasy books whose fantasy can be scientifically explained. The best example I can think of is sadly not a book though. Fullmetal Alchemist. While they could of just said "Yeah Alchemy is magic blah blah blah." they went out of their way to explain things scientifically.(i.e. the allotropes of carbon, the law of conservation of mass, etc.) I,unfortunately, have been unable to find any books who are reminiscent of this so I settle for books who limit magic by rules. Other than that I read philosophies such as The Art of War by Sun Tzu, Utopia by Sir Thomas Moore, etc. Also mythologies. Edith Hamilton is the best source I've found for Greek/Latin myths.

I'm shamed to state that my writing career was inspired by the book Eragon. Not because I liked it. Far from it. It was such crap that I personally took offense to the reputation Paolini was giving young writers. Therefore, I decided to see if I could beat him.

I think the favorite thing I like to read about is what will happen before of after the apocalypse, or a major nuclear war. But I do also love fantasy and I'd probably read anything as long as it had a dragon in it (even Pendragon counts ^^). My favorite type of characters are the ones that a quiet most of the time, but every once in a while will say something sarcastic or funny.

I like epic fantasy and science fiction. Dune and A Song of Ice and Fire are among my favorites. Somewhat more realistic, as in a world where, assuming the setting is real, the things that happen could actually happen. Plenty of awesome characters help aswell.

I like simpler things too, though. The Warhammer novels about Malus Darkblade - fairly simple entertainment, but .. very entertaining entertainment.

And, to some extent, horror stories. I like a lot of Stephen King's stuff, my favorite being either The Dead Zone or The Stand. I also .. feel I should mention Dracula. Along with the first two, those three are probably my all-time favorites.

I also just remembered - Lovecraft. I haven't read any of the longer stories, but my brother has this collection of horror short stories, including .. Let's see, Pickman's Model and the Music of Erich Zann. Those two were insanely creepy, just the way I like my horror stories.

"The mystery of life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced." - Aart Van Der Leeuw
I'm a nerd for saying this, but... I love historical fiction and classic authors to death. Patrick O'Brian, Christopher Isherwood, Patrick Suskind, W. Somerset Maugham, Victor Hugo, etc. Books about old times, and books written in old times. But occasionally, when they're really interesting, fantasy and contemporary strike my fancy. (Ex: The Dark Tower and Street Pharm)

When I was younger I really liked adventure stories like Redwall and The Sight, and those are still pretty good.

I am unworthy of your words,
I cannot sing your minor thirds.

Truly I like anything! Except the obvious dud. I tend to like the character to be mysterious and then deep down is really in pain and finds things funny and cute but tries to hide it....you know...a big ego! pirate

Murder, hitmen, espionage, fantasy, science fiction, ghosts, steampunk, forgotten mythologies, historical fiction, the shinsengumi, vampire HUNTERS, alternate universes, viruses and GENGHIS KHAN ********.

Seriously, just got done with Conn Iggulden's book Genghis: Birth of an Empire. Almost shat a brick. Amazing book. The fact that 95% of it is totally true makes it even more cool.

Take a peek through American Psycho. One of the best books out there. It has yuppies, cocaine, random murder, sex and a twisted ending that only Chuck Palahnuik could have seen coming.

Battle Royale is pretty badass too. Your typical government-conspiracy thing, but with Japanese middle schoolers killing each other before a time limit so that one will survive and "win." It's pure fun.

That sounds pretty damn sweet to me.

Battle Royale was pretty damn sick (in both the good and the bad sense). I loved it, except for there were issues that seriously bugged me. Still... super awesome, though less awesome if you go back and try to read it again.

Genghis what pretty sick too, but that's okay. Sick is entertainment. ^.^

Battle Royale had such an effect on me that the first day I got it, I drove home from work and started reading it. I was tired, so I stopped and took a nap and had a dream about being in the same type of game. I was running around ambushing my friends and former classmates stealing their weapons and killing them. It was hilarious.

Iggulden deserves kudos for that book. It was AWESOME. I got the sequel and am currently reading it. >:3

Battle Royale is a amazing book. I'm reading it right now! I've already seen the movie which just freaking amazing so I already know what happens but it's still just as intense. Now I have to watch the second movie!

I like books with plenty of action and some romance, where the charaters are unusual and energetic. Also there has to b an interesting villian!

this is my main character.
These are in no particular order.

- Supernatural/paranormal stuff. I can't help it, I just love the impossible.

- Things that are challenging. This can be a challenge of intellect, morality, the conventions of literature, or really anything at all.

- Strong female characters. It's not worth reading otherwise.

- Little or no romantic subplots. Unless it is a GLBT romantic subplot, in which case, bigger, better, faster, more!

- Flow. Spelling and grammar errors are not appreciated, nor is anything else which distracts me and brings my reading to even a momentary halt.

- There is an ending. I am rewarded for the time I have invested in this book. Do NOT just stop, or kill a character off, or try to pull the wool over my eyes. The ending should be the best damn part.

- Concise descriptions. I don't need much description, because I have something called an imagination! *GASP*

- Likable characters. If I don't care about them, the only thing I have to look forward to is the character's deaths.

I'm magically delicious!

Androids, trains (why is every nearly every story with a lot of trains good?), hard science fiction, strong female characters.

I like a writer who is effective in their words. If someone starts to get purple or stupid, I drop them like an old hat.

Genres: angst, fantasy, sci-fi, romance,

Topics: homosexuality, bullyism, suicide, body image, religion, conspiracy, aliens

Characters: ones that seemingly follow a trend but have all kinds of surprises, females that can stand alongside men without losing or rejecting their femininity, physically (un)attractive characters that have actual thought to them

GenisofArchael@- a lot of people say that Eragon was bad, but they never elaborate. Would you tell me what is wrong with it so I can avoid the same mistakes?

I breath tepin and I bleed habanero.

i like to read about fantasy creatures in made up lands, great battles that are not historic and stories that have to do with the elements

characters with hard circumstances that have to fight for their rightful place

I'm glad this topic is going somewhere. I feared it wouldn't. =3

I enjoy fantasy a lot, vampires don't bother me, but I'm all around not interested in them. The fantasy books I enjoy most are ones with an in-depth plot, which is a lot more complicated than the usual 'save the world' concept.

Sci-Fi is a genre I enjoy a lot as well because they are generally intriguing and make you think.

But anything that combines psychology and sci-fi is great. Slightly off topic, but that's the main reason I adored the concept of The Matrix.

Books I enjoy include Artemis Fowl, Dragon Jouster, Abhorsen, and DragonLance.
