Hey, everyone!

I recently had this idea for a fanfiction floating around in my head, and by recent I mean it only just came to me today hours ago. Since then I've got a general idea about where I want this thing to go; however, I seem to have trouble with subplots, you know those points where it actually helps flesh out the fanfiction. I was wondering if you guys could help me?

I don't want to post my ideas until I have the go-ahead, since I'm not entirely sure I'm meant to be here in this particular part of the forum.

Do you have a main plot? Do you have an idea for a subplot? Is it a subplot or a B plot?

I do have a main plot, and I have a subplot. I'm not sure what a B plot is.

Would you mind if I messaged you?

Go right a head. A B plot is just a second plot (which is an A plot when there are multiple ones)
Hmmm.

Would a plot based around someone learning to play a PvP (player vs player combat) in an MMO (basically an online RPG game) and eventually end up playing in high-end tournaments? IMO, it's only a haze right now but I think it could be feasible.

Well, Yugi-Oh made game playing and gambling interesting.

True, but that's a Manga, not a written novel that I somehow have to encapture the action in words into...

I guess I'll have to figure that out myself.

Thanks for your insight :3

True, that is a visual medium. But aren't there books on this sort of thin, too?

True.

The market seems to be niche, but I can imagine how hard it's going to be to capture the action.

EDIT: That is, without confusing the reader with loads of game term usage.

True. It's not a niche I know, sadly. I can help with general bits, but not with specifics. Sorry.

need help with an idea for two inexperienced babysitters (them being Max and Willis) taking care of a bratty, outta control 8-yr old, who hates vegetables, loves sugar, and pretty much takes advantage of the two in order to do whatever she wants (the little girl being caucasian and her name: Tina (nickname: Lil' Tina)

hey everyone,
I used to do a lot of writing (short stories and poetry mostly) But have not had the time in the last few months for it and am wanting to get back into it...

Problem is, I'm totally stuck on where to begin! I mainly want to focus on Short stories at the moment, to improve my writing style and things like that..

anyway, if anyone has any advice on how to get back into it, or just where you draw inspiration from... that would be awesome smile
So... here's my dilemma. I've got characters. I've got a rather vague idea of the plot. However, I'm missing the one crucial thing to bring it all together: THE ITEM. The reason it's all happening. I'm not sure if it's an actual item, or some kind of information, or even both, but god damn do I need it and I can't think of what it might be.

Here's my setup. The story is steampunk, set in an alternate reality Europe. I have two sets of characters who are tentatively connected via THE ITEM.

Set one: Spade, Liv, and Liv's father. Liv is important. She knows something, something related to THE ITEM. Her father told her this something, because he either works for Mr. X or for Mr. X's competitor (not sure which). Then he's murdered because of this information, shortly after Spade and Liv befriend each other. Spade takes her under his wing and they "disappear."

Set two: Thecla, Hixby, and Mr. X. Thecla is an informant/spy posing as a call girl/prostitute. She works (or at least associates) with Mr. X. Mr. X needs somebody to either transport THE ITEM to someone (but who, and why?), or to keep THE ITEM safe for some amount of time. Thecla finds Hixby, a sky pirate, to do the job.

Then the two sets of characters meet up, when either Thecla or Hixby hires Spade to help them out (with Liv tagging along). At some point they discover that Liv knows much more about THE ITEM than any of them. I'm sure something happens at that point, but until I actually know what THE ITEM is and what Liv knows, it will have to wait.

The only thing I've come up with so far is that, because it's a steampunk world, this is something related to the Industrial Revolution (which never happened, unlike in our world) -- an alternate power source that will revolutionize the world. But even that is pretty vague, and I'm not sure what it would be or even if that's what I want to use. Ideas?

I'm trying to repress Steamboy memories here.

...I think we need to know more about Liv, as the tiem seems most related to her.
Hm. Well, her mother died when she was little, so her father's pretty much all she's had. However, they're not really that close because he's always working and he's not quite sure how he's supposed to be raising a girl, so he kind of lets her do her own thing when he's not telling her about his work (the only thing he's comfortable talking about -- I'm thinking he's kind of socially inept and only ended up with Liv's mother by chance). I'm not sure yet how old she is in the story -- somewhere between 10-15. She has kind of an obsession with wanting to fly, which is what leads to her and Spade meeting: her favorite place is up on the roof, and she hears a commotion on the street and falls off the building. Spade catches her and saves her life, and they become friends. It works, because they're both kind of odd ducks.

Well (to me) I'd connect both the flying thing and the father to the ITEM. But not directly.

Such as the roof was her favorite place to read letters or talk to her father about his work and trough him she learned of a colleague working on or looking for the ITEM.
