Welcome to Gaia! ::

Do you fiction writers ever worry that your interpretation of a myth is so much of a stretch that the original idea, that sparkly little thing, is lost and no longer what so caught your eye?

Just curious.

No. All my ideas in that regard I think are great.

Careful, if you step out of line and make something sparkle too much, you'll be regarded as the anti-Christ and blamed for the Holocaust.

Doesn't matter. Mess with people's idea of ancient myths too much and you'll be burned like a witch.

Meh. You're right. Sadly. It's too much to hope for that people would just appreciate what's written and look the other way when one sorta makes a myth synonym...

Do you come on this site a lot? People HATE that author. Eight out of ten threads on this forum can't go a page with out some off-hand reference to how much she's hated. I doubt she gives a s**t, but still.

This is too stupid to be trolling.
He might not of put it in the right way, but he does have a good point. I recall when Harry Potter first came out the backlash from the far right, out of touch with reality Christian groups who were adamant the book encouraged children into witchcraft, despite the obvious mentions of Christmas and overall sort of acknowledgment of a greater purpose to things as well as a good reinterpretation of the Holocaust.

For the record, the original title of the first book was "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". When it was brought to America, the title was changed due to the fact that Christian fanatics were afraid that the Philosopher's Stone concept would lead their children to research the idealistic concept and main premise of Medieval Alchemical research. It was too close to occult devil worship to them. So they changed it to Sorcerer's Stone... I'm sure part of it was also confusion on their part over what "Philosopher" meant anyway. Sorcerer gives it up as a "Devilworshipping handbook" so parents could avoid it.

Twilight while horrible fiction, has the backing of a moronic fanbase and a Mormon writer. Not saying her religion has anything to do with how the book is, but there's just a love story there to let women in their thirties and teens fantasize about an unrealistic, attractive male stalker because they lack any real concept of human romantic relations.

So while Klaark might have put it sort of simply and harshly - he does have a point. People tend to get bent out of shape anytime you use mythology. Generally it's the paranoid religions who don't necessarily understand pagan cultures or their mythologies, but there are small sects of pagans too who go crazy over stuff like that.

Hm. I re-wrote the story of Daphne and Apollo once, and made it awesome. But, I never did get anyone else's opinion on that- it was supposed to be an English project, but I sent something else in instead, because I didn't think my teacher would appreciate the attempted rape scenes.

But I think as long as you stick to the bare bones, there really shouldn't be a problem. If you have to, remind people that it's fiction, as in make-believe.

Ha! No, I mean, why hasn't she been actually strung out by other authors and verbally slapped for what she's done to the vampire myth.
And, that was an off-hand reference to how much she's hated.
