All these silly people, making such a fuss over wanting to build upon a pre-existing idea. It's not a fanfiction; it's an idea spawned from a pre-existing concept. After all, every story is just old elements reheated and arranged slightly differently, aren't they? Nothing new under the sun, right?
In any case, I'd say go for it. I've gotten the prompt "strip a book's plot to its core (e.g. Harry Potter, a boy goes to learn magic) and think about how you would've wrote it" many a time before. If we're talking about Fairy Tail, I guess that'd make it about a guild of mages, right?
Actually, in reference to Harry Potter. Why not have someone invited into the guild of mages themselves, like Harry was to Hogwarts? Or merge the concept of aeons (mainly from Final Fantasy) as an ability, and whilst we're in Fantasy wonderland, perhaps each mage is assigned a specific familiar upon entrance?
Just kicking up ideas. Fantasy and otherwise unexplainable magic really isn't my thing nowadays, but I wish you luck in your story all the same.
