Well there are a lot of Asians with "american" names. Off the top of my head: John, Mark, Mike, David, Jeremy, Susie, Jennifer, Cherry...and these aren't just "Oh that's my English name my real name is..." These are their real names. But I've never thought it odd. Well one of my friends calls himself Anslem...>.> no not after Ansem (KH) either.
True, I know a Jackie who is 100% Korean. But that may just be because they are American in citizenship, and so the parents decided it would be more practical than whatever name they would have given him. If, for instance, I lived in China - I might consider a Chinese name for my child, even though they'd be (Swedish, English) American. If I intended for them to live in China for the greater majority of their life, it might just be... easier for them to have a Chinese name. Although, I suppose, China's a poor example considering that country's the worst for giving their kids American 'names'. I use the term lightly.

Mmm, the guy who originally wrote "Who Let the Dogs Out" was named Anslem.
"I_Write_Ivre"
"Vi Jade"
"Surgeonfish"
I'd like to read a story where a character's parents were so obsessed with anime that they gave him/her a Japanese name. . . even though he/she is very, very white.

It'd be funny to have them have to explain to people.

HAH! I'm not the only one. I love my best friend but she is very very white and wants to name her son Azrael....which is pretty but for a boy? Does she want him to get beat up?

Azrael: angel of death; 'whom God helps'

Also the name of a male character of mine

thank you. Azrael is just as good a boy name as Micheal or Gabriel. I'd avoid using Uriel as a name though >.> Hell, even i'd pick on my kid if I named him that. I like the name Balthazar though >.> so perhaps I shouldn't name kids. Ptolemy is also a good one >.< I want to bring back the old philosopher names and not just in cats.

Okay okay I take it back. I like the name....I just live in podunk town where anything unusual is a reason to get beat up. I think they are rubbing off on me. [shudder] I severely hope not.

Azrael for a boy is not so bad, you all have convinced but for the sake of fun, I'm still going to pick on my best friend, because it is oh so much fun.
Setting and parentage determines names for me. Nadeshiko from QUEST, for example, is French, but was born in Japan to parents who both love Japanese culture and do a lot of business in Japan. So it makes sense, somewhat, for her to have a Japanese name.

How do you feel about it?

Personally, it annoys me unless the author has a reason for doing this. If it's just an, "Oh, well I like this name." and the characters happens to be like, African or something...It'd be weird to meet a black chick with the name "Akemi."
Like I said, if the author has a reason for naming their character this, then I don't mind.

What do you think of it?

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but Kemi is an "African-African" name.

Oluwakemi. (kemi for short.)

the ******** is not.
I meant like a traditional african name.
Both of my parents were born and raised in Nigeria.
There was a white girl in my brother's class name "Qian," which I believe is Chinese. Her parents picked it because they liked it. So, with the invention of the internet, if someone in my White-a** town likes Asian names and decided to name their child that, it can't be THAT uncommon.
While I don't use out-of-place names in my stories, tt doesn't throw me off so much in a read so long as it's not a cheesy story otherwise.

Although, funniest story ever: An older cousin of mine named her kid "Roxas."
AHAHAHAHAHA.
I agree that it depends on the persons race plus features.
If there was an indian with a asian name, yes it would be kinda weird, but surely there was some since in naming their child that. Maybe it was a name in the family or it was the parents dream to always name there child such name.
I am mainly disturbed by parents who name there sons female names. (well names that sound like a females name) EX: Ashlee and Kasey, to guys i kno with names like that...it sounds like a females name more so than a males
