What I find funny is that most Asians (in real life) don't even have Asian names.

Uh huh... riiiight....

Most Asians in America don't have Asian names.

Go to Korea, China, Japan, Mongolia, or any other country on the continent of Asia.
Guarantee they'd have Asian names.

Nest she'll complain about my black character, whose background is never mentioned, has a Polish last name because 'he doens't look Polish'

rolleyes
Should the name matter or the personality? Why get bent out of shape if the name is not to your liking? If the name is not to your liking, does that mean you will automatically put the book down?
I think that with names you really can't say its more of an opinionated thing i really don't see a problem with naming an American character a name that isn't American if it fits the personality tho i do agree that it gets annoying if the name doesn't work with the character at all its just kinda annoying... tho that's just my opinion

Um...let me clarify since clearly you have not been around many. Those most Asians do have Asian names in real life. I have come across those most, however, they prefer being called by their American name.

Have you ever considered that they do this around you because you're american?

Do (some) black people say "n***a" less often around white people?

In my experience the answer would be no.

Case closed. Bring in the dancing lobsters.

That shouldn't matter if I am American or not. They are trying to fit in and that's fine. Besides, have you ever thought that saying an Asian name might be difficult for us Americans? Americans are used to many languages but not those of the Asian part of the world. It might or is a little harder for us to speak unless you are fluent and/or Asian.

Edit: You think Asian are afraid of Americans? The way you phrased that, you can consider that statement/question as in they are trying to please me so no one will hurt them because they are Asian while using a American name and not their birth name .(I hope I made sense)

I'll restate it: Just because I am American means nothing for them to use their American name around me. They could use their birth name and I will try my best to say it right.

Way to end an argument without even hearing the opposing side.

By the way this a very, very poor comparison, but if you want to continue arguing this with me, PM me.

That's exactly why I think they only use those names around Americans, because they are difficult for us to pronounce. I don't see how that defended your position, but okay.

Once again, PM me if you really care about this, we're starting to derail from the topic.

And in my experience, the answer is yes. That proves nothing.

I suppose it is a bad example, but I've seen worse.
I had a teacher who adopted a Korean girl. She kept the girl's first two names as her first and middle name, so her name is, like, Yun Ah Coyle (that's not her real name, but I couldn't think of a Korean name that isn't mine).

A friend of mine got knocked up and she named her baby Yuki. Yuki Moore, a totally American baby with a mother who is all otaku.

I suppose it depends on the parents and setting.
It really depends razz
Maybe it is passed down through the family, or a dedication to a dead person... maybe you took a trip somewhere, and fell in love with a name...
But i agree with many, it's ok to an extent.
