Welcome to Gaia! ::

So I have a novel that I'm working on that's based off the concept of Alice in Wonderland.
Like, I use Underland, Hatter, Alice, Queen of Hearts, etc. but they're in a war setting more akin to The Looking Glass Wars.
I'm just wondering if when I finish the whole process of writing and editing and maybe still would like it published by that point if there's anything I should worry about when I get to that point.
Get to that point first. You've got a lot of writing and a lot of editing afterwards before you get there.

The original works are in the public domain, so ya know. Hints all the takes on this story from Tin man to whatever.

I think it'd depend on the publisher. While Lewis Caroll Alice stuff is public domain, I believe Underland belongs to Disney.

Yeah, I know I have a long way to go, but I really just wanted to know if there were any legal issues before I dug myself too deep into my story.
It'd be sort of depressing if I spent so much time on it and I couldn't actually go anywhere with it.

Okay, thank you. o:
So using Wonderland would be okay then?

Wonderland, the caucus race, mock turtle, and all the politcal and math parodies are public domain.
I believe that if you don't use any names that were used in the original "Alice's adventure's underground" books such as Mad hatter, March hare, Cheshire cat, you should be fine if you notice in the Looking Glass Wars book he references he book, but technically doesn't take any of the characters directly from it instead he morphs them into completely brand new characters and thus they wouldn't be subject to copyright. Such as instead Of using Alice he used Aylss and Alice Liddle's name who was a real person which is subject to public domain. He never uses Queen of Hearts either which may be under Disney copy right. Sorry if this input doesn't help too much. I myself being in the same boat as you has also been trying to figure this out.

Thank you I wasn't too certain about that and that's why I only mentioned that it "maybe under Disney copyright"
