Looking for references or tips

Hello!

I'm working on a piece for someone on Gaia...
And I realize, now that I've spent a lot of time on it... that I have no idea what I'm doing.


SO.

Please note that this is the WIP forum and that this work is.. rough at best. I know it's sloppy in some areas but I'm more concerned with straight up positioning and other basics like that.

..Unless of course the issue stems from something like texture. :b

Here are the issues:
1) What: The "normal" hand. It's wonky at best.
What I think is wrong: Possibly the connecting arm position. Possibly the hand size. Maaybe the wrist.

2) What: The "ice" hand. It doesn't look like ice..
What I think is wrong: That I have no idea what I'm doing.

3) What: The mouth. I was trying to do a completely different perspective for the face but had to scrap the idea altogether. The mouth never ended up looking quite right after I changed it.
What I think is wrong: The upper lip. I'm not sure if it should be pulled up higher or what. Possibly just the surrounding skin area, mostly shading issues maybe.


What I'm requesting:
Any references, tips, just straight up saying what I'm doing wrong, or any other sort of critique is welcomed.



As a side note: I was thinking about making an official "reference/help request thread"... where people could post a submission sort of form, I'd link them in a main post, and if they resolve their problem I'd put that next to their link (so that other people may learn in the future)

This was before I knew this subforum existed so.. I'm not sure if there would be too many people requesting or if it's just a bad idea period.
Thoughts on that?

1. The problem I see is definitely that the hand is too small (which is exaggerated greatly by the ice hand) other than that, the forearm seems a bit small as well in length and girth.

2. I found two tutorials on ice that may be useful.

3. The problem with the mouth I'd have to say would be the upper lip (or rather, lack there of.)

One more thing. I didn't think shoulders could go that high, then I tried the pose myself and measured in comparison to ear height & it worked, so I think the problem there is the lack of collarbone/muscle between the shoulder and neck.

Ah, I guess I should have provided a link alternative to the pic. I'll do so now!

I actually had a friend model the hand for me and.. I don't know, I guess the angle was just off or something.
(or maybe my friend is weird lookin' emotion_awesome )

I wish I had saved a screenshot of when I was first trying the ice. I couldn't decide how it would.. be shaped. Regarding edges/flat surfaces. It kept looking too boxy.
I'll give it another try.. maybe make the flat sides around the fingers smaller than I did before... ;d

I figured the lip would be stretched out thinly and adding color made it look like he was wearing lipstick. Hm.
I'll try more subtle colors.

Yeah.. the shoulders got borked in the transition between perspectives.
Originally, I was trying to have the view more going down his nose.. kinda. Anyway, I couldn't draw it for crap. And I had the worst time trying to figure out how to google that.

I have a horrible habit of not looking up a reference until I'm like 10 hours into a pic.. and then I notice that something is off.

..Hence this thread. emotion_awesome

For me, what I thinks off is the lower parts of his arms. I think they're too small and that his nipples are too low.

The only tutorials I can think of are in the "artist toolbox" on tumblr.
Here's the tags that are under 'arms' as an example They have a lot of tips and tricks! I hope the link will be helpful and sorry that I couldn't help you more.

I think it's.. weird. But better.

Maybe.

Anyway I think the corners of the mouth need to go upwards a little... ;d


And the teeth are dumb but they're a pain in the butt and.. bleh.
He can just be used for the "always floss your teeth, kids!" videos.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe my guy has one or two too many teeth. emotion_awesome

Teeth aren't something I care about in art though. Is that weird?
That's weird.

I'm definitely not opposed to making it look more like a titan.. but I'm not sure that the recipient would enjoy it as much. :b


I'm fairly new to photoshop and basically just winging everything I'm doing..
