Welcome, as far as pointers go it depends on what you want to do here. If you like to dress up your avatar or avi you'll probably need lots of gold which can be gotten from the booty grab mini-game found by clicking on people's fish tanks in their signatures or playing zomg. If you want to make lots of friends you check out the guilds to find people with common interests. And if you want to talk about strange topic there is the chatterbox forum where you'll likely encounter a few trolls but mostly normal folk.

I think Zor answered your question pretty well. There are a lot of things to do here on Gaia. It all depends what you are interested in. But, I'm sure if you have questions ... someone would be glad to help you.
