I would recommend checking out some of the forums pertaining to your interests and reading through a few threads before posting right away. Try greeting some of the new Gaians in this very forum and the Friends Chat subforum if you want. You can bond over your inexperience.

After firing upon the fecal matter for a bit, maybe look into getting some items from charities or questing. Active, well made (and maintained) quests threads tend to generate a lot of conversation. It's inevitable that you will make friends that way.
