You get gold through posting and surfing around Gaia, not to mention by lurking around the Aquarium Forum, playing Booty Grab (by clicking signatures that has fish tanks that say "Booty Grab" on it.

Also, I'm not a fan of zOMG, but you can also get gold from there.

It is accessible through "My Gaia" Tab and Aquarium option should be there. The second option.
