Welcome to gaia, there are multiple ways to earn gold.
Buying and selling items, posting on the forums, games and such.
A good way to earn gold is by doing the free cash offers, and selling the items, might take a while but it's kinda worth it.

There are a lot of ways to get gold XD
Er posting in forums, buying then selling items for more gold, selling items, answering bottle letters from the aquarium, events may give gold, so many ways xd
Click on the ammount of gold you have, there should be a white underline then it'll send you to this page telling you how to get gold. biggrin

I'd say the easiest is playing Booty Grab.
Go to the Gaia Aquarium forum from the front forum page and look for topics that say 'My Tank Is Glowing' at the bottom of the first post should be their 'tank' that is flashing or glowing. It's like a mini game where you need to catch the coins that the fish drop. A warning though, you need a flash player and a good internet connection.

Sorry I just re-checked, most now just have "Glowing" somewhere in their title. Depending on the tank it's easily almost a couple hundred every time you play.

In my experience it's easiest to get a lot of gold if you sell your art.

The gold you get from posting adds up quickly if you're active in the forums.
