PROTIP: There are a lot of raging assholes outside of the Welcome Forum. Like TanuKyle mentioned earlier, checking out forums regarding topics that interest you is a good way to start.

You can also join one or more guilds based around your interests. Also be sure to check out the Charity/Quests subforum of the Exchange. There are Charity threads there that specialise in giving items to new/poor users.
