Welcome to Gaia! ::

I do like your style. It's all true, I agree whole-heartedly biggrin
Nice writing
I'm giving you a citation for abuse of accented characters...

There's nothing wrong with a cliche: the best writers use them. xd As long as their used well no one really cares. It's when the writing is piss poor that they stick out like a sore thumb.

Speaking of cliches: do sore thumbs really stick out?

You're actually spot on, but I'd extend this

To: There's nothing wrong with anything, unless it's horribly written. For the reason that I believe anything, cliche, sex scene, flashback, can work if it is written well and suited to its particular context. Part of writing well is knowing when to go with convention, and when to go against it.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, and in reply to your statement, well, I did state this in my post:

"Actually, all horribly written stories deserve to be disliked, but I’m going off topic here."

Yeah.

I know, but then the main point of this post is that many people flame cliched stories, well written or not. But thanks for commenting anyway, and sore thumbs stick out if people actually bother to read them - I think. =)
It really is a matter of talent, judgement and experience. Yeah, there are some stories that have a snowball's chance in hades of ever working because they're so outright stupid, but... for the most part, it all depends on the writer.

If I've said it once, I've said it a million times... a writer with any real talent can take a cliche and make it an awesome story, but the best of ideas in the hands of a writer with no talent (and or experience or judgement) will never be good.

The world is full of cliches just waiting for a writer with talent to grab them and make them great. After all, it's ALL been done/thought up/happened before. The problem being, the serious lack of talented writers. My sister just read a book that's on the NY Times best seller list. She also said that some of the stuff she's editing right now for total novices has it beat all over the place. Imagine that.

I do not trust anything associated with that list then.

I've never really trusted bestsellers in the first place. Bad experience. domokun
Did you know that the word CLICHE IS A CLICHE??

Did you know that people who post in oversized brown centered font are immediately hated?

Exactly.

And thank you, for with your username, I now have stumped my teacher at Hangman!

There's nothing wrong with cliche. Really. Cliched characters are fine with me, along with cliched magic systems and of the like. The only thing I really hate is when something is SO cliched that you can tell the ending by reading the first sentence. Okay, I know, but I'm the master of hyperboles, so bear with me. It's just that things like that are painful to read.

I'm testing my endurance by reading Eldest. xp
I'm rather fond of cliches. They became so over used because they work. Besides, even if the idea is completely over used, like the princess running away to avoid getting married. That idea has been used hundreds upon hundreds of times, but it's what happens after she runs away that makes each version different. Where she goes, who she meets, that's all up to the individual author.
