[OOC] [Profiles]

It’s a world that has seemingly always had superhumans standing above the normal populace. While superhumans began to appear in numbers sometime in the early 1900’s, research suggests that they may have appeared in isolated incidents throughout history. This has led to some speculation, perhaps justified, that the myths and legends of the ancient world may have been based on real events left in the wake of superhumans from those eras. This would mean that the heroes and gods of lore actually existed, though their exploits, like the tall tales of today, were greatly exaggerated.

Regardless of how long superhumans have roamed this Earth, they are now here in extensive numbers. Since those first few superhumans were officially recognized back at the turn of the last century, their population has steadily grown throughout the decades. More importantly, each generation has also demonstrated stronger and more diverse powers than the last. Whatever the source for superhuman powers might be, it seems to be growing in prevalence.

Today, the veteran heroes of Pinnacle City are nearing their endgame, and are in search of others to pass the torch to. Will the young supers step up to fill their shoes, or will this metropolis be left without a premier superhero force protecting it?

Rules

1. Obey Gaia TOS at all times!
2. All posts should adhere to a strictly PG-13 rating. Cybersex, explicit nudity and extreme violence shall not be permitted in thread.
3. Be considerate of other players in your roleplay. Do not roleplay in a fashion that takes fun away from other players. This includes, but is not limited to, godmodding and offensive behavior.
4. An exception to the rule against godmodding is if a character is put into a situation that the character's player does not want the character in. The player may then use any means necessary to leave the situation, but ONLY to leave the situation. They may not godmod to retaliate against whomever put the character in the situation.
5. Flames will not be tolerated.
6. Avoid OOC comments in the RP thread. If you must make an OOC comment, do so in double parentheses ((like this)). Also, when an OOC comment is no longer needed, go back and delete it to avoid clutter in the thread. When possible, direct all OOC comments to our OOC thread.
7. As I would like to keep this thread small and manageable, please try not to clutter the thread with unnecessary text by quoting other players. If you wish to use quotes to let people know that you've responded, please leave it empty.
8. All character profiles should be posted in the profile thread. You will receive a private message regarding your profile, either approving your character for play, or discussing some changes that may need to be made.
9. This is a literate roleplay, so please use appropriate spelling, punctuation and grammar in your posts. Posts should be written in third person prose, like snippets of a short story. There are no requirements for post length, as we should be more concerned with quality over quantity. As long as you can communicate what your character is doing, post length won't be an issue unless they are continuously extremely long or short.
10. Pictures and pretty posts are encouraged, but not required. It is suggested that you put your profile in a color that you feel comfortable with, and then use this color for your character's speech text.
11. You may play as many characters as you can handle, but please post them together if they're in the same scene/conversation. (This is one reason that pretty posts aren't required, since posting characters together like this becomes an issue with any preset pictures or layouts that you may have prepared for them.)
12. On occasion, a post with ::EVENT:: in the text body will be made. The body of this post will detail some occurrence that is affecting all of the RP. Please watch for these.

Storyline

In the sprawling metropolis of Pinnacle City, many members of the city's premier superhero team, the Stalwart, have started to settle into retirement, no longer having the endless energy that came with youth. The few other teams present in the city are disorganized or of negligible power levels, making them ineffective replacements for the retiring heroes. The few remaining heroes of old see this trend, and fear for the future of their dear city. In an effort to prepare a new generation to replace them, they have devised a plan to organize a new team from the young superhumans who have yet to find their place.

Under the guise of the "Achievement Center for Advanced Youth," a specialized high school targeting teens with "special and unique" aptitudes and abilities, they recruit and train the next generation of heroes. They hope to mold these kids into the next team of protectors for their city, though many of the kids just see it as a normal school to assist them in adjusting to their powers and to society. For the most part, the creators of the Center do little to alter this misconception, but slowly nudge the fledgling superheroes towards a path of righteousness.

The Center is located on the upper floors of Kensington Plaza, the tallest skyscraper in the city, and employs numerous superhumans as teachers and counselors, thinking that these individuals would be most able to understand the unique needs that a superhuman child may have. Many of the staff is hired to operate in plainclothes, appearing to many of the visitors simply as normal humans with an understanding of superpowers and the pitfalls that may come to a child who’s adapting to them. Some of the plainclothes staff openly displays their own powers to build a better rapport with their charges, and express the challenges that they may have faced themselves while adapting to being in normal society. Others are hired as costumed staff who mentor the superpowered youths in understanding and controlling their powers, or other elements that directly involved being superpowered.

All students are sponsored by one of the recognized superheroes of the city, whom they often maintain a mentor relationship with when possible. Students have housing on the premises (each student is given a private room), but those wishing to live off campus in their own homes are permitted to do so.

Super Origins

There are six major origins that players may choose from. These are the supergene origin, medical origin, technological origin, personal betterment origin, magical origin and racial origin. These are listed here in the order of prevalence. The majority of characters should fall under the supergene origin, with the second highest number being medical, and the third being technological. A fair number, though far from common, will possess the personal betterment origin. Magical and racial origins should be the rarest of them all. Supers may have backgrounds that can overlap two or more of these origins, depending on the nature of their powers.

Supergene: As the numbers of superhumans in the world steadily increases, it has become apparent that there is some underlying source for the abilities that these supers possess. Recent research has led to the discovery of a supergene, a genetic link that somehow bestows powers and abilities upon the possessor once the gene has become active. The reasons why a dormant supergene might become active is uncertain, though many researchers believe that radiation may play a part. This makes sense, since the increasing numbers of supers appearing across the globe coincides with the relative increase in ambient radiation caused by man’s technology. Supers of this origin fall into one of two types.

Induced super – Supers of this type usually have had their latent supergene activated through the sudden and traumatic exposure to some kind of radiation or energy source. Their powers are usually influenced by the nature of the exposure that they underwent, or the circumstances surrounding the incident. Another form of induced super are those that have had their supergene activated by the gradual exposure to ambient radiation in the atmosphere. These usually start to manifest their abilities in their teens, when the body’s changes due to puberty make them more susceptible to the altered biological processes from an active supergene.

Born super – Supers of this type have an active supergene that was passed on to them from one or both of their parents. They often display their powers earlier than induced supers, sometimes from birth. They will almost always have shown evidence of their abilities before reaching their teenaged years, though.

Medical: Medical origins include any supers whose powers originate from either a rare, yet natural, medical condition, or that have somehow been altered through experimental procedures. This could include genetic manipulation, cybernetic implantation, rare yet beneficial syndromes, and physical modifications.

Technological: Supers with this origin rely on man-made items or components for their abilities. These items may be of magical or scientific creation, but the powers contained within are not inherent to the super who possesses it. Given the proper circumstances, the item or components could be used by another character.

Personal Betterment: Supers of the personal betterment option have trained extensively to push their normal faculties to a level that makes them the best at what they do. They have skills and abilities that far surpass normal humans, but are not truly superhuman in the strictest sense of the word. They possess skills that any human could foster in themselves if they took the time to do so. They may have been taught a potent martial art, or mastered a particular weapon

Magical: Magic is a power that is far older than any known superhuman, but is not practiced as readily or openly as in past centuries. In much of history, those who performed magic were scorned or hunted, and their numbers dwindled through the ages. Like the supergene, there is some evidence that magical ability can be passed down from parent to child, though there are some instances of it being taught to those without previous knowledge or affinity for the arcane. All magic, though, requires energy, life energy, in order to manifest. There are several sources for this energy.

Personal energies – This is the use of one’s own inner life energy to fuel their magic. This is perhaps the safest energy source, since a person cannot actually harm themselves by drawing on their own life energy. Instead, using too much from this source will simply cause the magician to pass out before taking so much energy as to do harm. Over time, the energy will regenerate. Magic fueled by personal energies is inherently weak, though, and limited by the magician’s inner life energy.

Local energies – This is the use of the life energies of the animals and plants near to the magician. Because of the larger pool of energy that the magician will have access to, greater spells may be cast. However, since the magician is no longer directly affected by the use of this energy, there is the threat of drawing energy past the amount that would harm the source. A magician that casts a spell that requires more energy than is readily available will find that the local flora will wither, and the fauna will collapse and die. However, if a magician is careful, this energy source provides enough power to fuel potent magic, and the local sources will heal with time. There have been cases, though, of ruthless magicians who have ripped a victim’s life energy away as part of a ritual sacrifice to fuel their dark magics.

Universal energies – Universal energies are perhaps both the best, and worst, source that a spellcaster could draw from. Universal energies draw on the pool of life energy that has not yet been born. As such, it is seemingly endless, supplying the witch or wizard with almost infinite energy and power. However, unlike life energies already bound to a vessel, universal energies do not replenish when used, so energy that is used simply ceases to exist, denying life to a creature of the future. Because this is life energy is its most natural form, it feels so pure and untainted to the spellcaster that they will often attest beyond all argument that using it cannot be an evil act.

Entreaties – Entreaties are not true magic, at least not in the sense of the person performing it is actually doing the magic. In an entreaty, the person is making contact with an otherworldly entity (such as a spirit, god or demon), and asking that entity to perform that magic for them. Entreaties do not require energy to fuel them, as the entity has its own reserves to draw from. The downside is that, while the entity may view the person favorably, they are still not obliged to perform the requested act, and may choose to ignore the summons if it pleases them.

Magical items – Magic may also be placed in a physical object, such as a charm or weapon. The magic of these items will function in all manners as it would by a magician. However, the more magic an item may tap into, the more energy is required to fuel it. An item of this sort will have to tap into an external energy source such as those listed above, treating the wielder as a magician. If an item is created with a limited number of magical abilities, though, it may be given an internal supply of energy that will replenish with time.

Racial: Any super with abilities that are naturally inherent to any of their kind have a racial origin. This would include aliens, gods, animals, half-breeds, mythical creatures, ghosts and robots.

Prologue

From the top of the highest skyscraper of Pinnacle City, a small group has gathered to look down upon the people below as they go about their daily routine. Their features show concern over what is to come.

“We won't be able to protect them for much longer. We're just not at our prime, anymore.”

“That is why we have to prepare others to follow us.”

“Will this work, though? Will we find youth willing to bare this burden. Times aren't like they used to be.”

One figure steps out from the others, lifting one leg to rest on the building's ledge.

“Even if it doesn't, it may at least keep some of them from becoming criminals, so it will still help the city in the long run. If even a few become more civic-minded, though, it will be worth the time and effort.”

Reluctantly, the others agree with this assessment. They observe the streets below for a moment longer, and then each leaves the roof in their own manner.

Megan studies the tall building with uncertainty. The address appears to be correct, but it certainly wasn't what she was expecting. She had imagined that the school would be in an ivy-covered academy, not a skyscraper downtown. Still, this is the place that Blue told her to visit, so she enters the building and goes to gaze at the signs next to the elevators. Sure enough, the sign lists the “Achievement Center for Advanced Youth” as being on the 12th through 15th floors, which appears to be as much verification as she's going to get from down here.

"Well, I guess this is the place."

She hops in the first available elevator and hits the button for the 12th floor. A numbered keypad immediately emerges from the wall facing, asking for a passcode. She blinks for a moment, and then remembers the code that Blue told her. She taps it in, and the elevator starts to go up. She gets out on the 12th floor, glancing around the very modern facilities. She wasn't sure what kind of special counseling they might offer here, but it seemed like a better shot than going to a therapist. Hopefully, she'd meet with other kids having a hard time adjusting to a normal life.

After a few moments, she ventures into the foyer, trying to see if there was anyone that she should speak to.

"Hello, anyone here?"

The entry seemed to be deserted, with only the room and adjoining hallway visible. There's a receptionist desk that's just a few feet in front of her, but there's no one manning it at the moment. Unsure of what to do, she waits to see if anyone would happen by. Surely there had to be some kind of desk help on duty.

“Geez. About as lively as the front desk.” Anika sipped at a soda she had retrieved from the only entity that seemed to interact with her – a vending machine.

It appeared to be common sense not to travel down that hallway attached to the first room, but she did regardless. Standing alone out there would have left her restless and moving around kept her mind off of it. There had to be some living being in the building. “Hello?” The confined hallway echoed in response to her question.

Honestly, Anika had not traveled far when she heard the arrival of another. Female, male, or other she was not sure until she heard the other's voice. “Finally.” She crushed the can in her hand and waited to dispose of it once she passed a trash bin. “Someone there?” Continuing down the hall, Anika swiveled her head in small circles as if she would get a glimpse of the other person sooner.

It was not long before Anika returned to the front room with the unmanned front desk. An instant smile flourished on her face as she spotted another female, closer to her age, standing around. “Hey!” She issued a small, yet friendly, wave before approaching the girl. “You wonderin’ where anyone is too? I checked this hall and I got nothing.” A thumb pointed back over her shoulder to the aforementioned hall with a shrug.

Hands in her pockets now, Anika waited curiously to hear from the other prospective student. Or at least she appeared to be one. She always tried to exercise 'never judge a book by its cover'. “Name's Anika. Were you... referred here too?” If she sounded like she was prying into her business, she hardly meant it. It was simply curiosity in meeting someone like herself.

Despite expecting that someone should be around, Megan is nonetheless startled by the young lady that directly addresses her. She's quick to get her composure back under control, though, telling herself that there's no reason to feel so self-conscious. After all, Blue said that there would be other students here, all of which would have something special about them. Maybe she doesn't have to feel like a freak in this place.

"Ummm... Hello. I'm Megan. Y-yes, I was told to come here. I have a sponsorship."

She wonders if that's really the right way to say it, but she can't think of another way to explain it better. She idly wonders what kind of abilities this girl may have. Even though she has something that people would refer to as a power, she tends to look at other people with powers in much the same way that normal people look at her. She's just weirded out by them. This is part of the reason that she's scared that her powers make her look like a freak.

After a few tense moments for the girl, she decides that she should make some concerted effort towards conversation. She doesn't want to see antisocial, either.

"So... you're a student here?"

It wasn't a very good question, but at least it was a question. Hopefully, it doesn't make her sound too stupid, since it should be pretty obvious that Anika is a student.

"Master it was a mistake to give me these gauntlets..."

He sighs looking at the gauntlets attached to his sides as he steps out of the elevator he sees two girls he glances away walking to the side and equipping his gauntlets and practicing his form as his master said

"Whatever that pressure was I need to surpass it..."

After Some time he stops and looks at the girls a little confused as to why there was only two others here even after the pressure he felt Maybe it was just my nerves
