"Just because I cannot see it..."

~~~~~~X~~~~~~
Bryce hurried through his shopping and rolled the basket up to the check-out lane, exhaling a sigh of relief as he picked up the copy of GQ off the top of his selections and began flipping through as he waited. Part of him was glad that his aunt let him shop for her, since he got to purchase the best items, even if the local Wal-Mart didn't carry the sort of fare to which he was accustomed. Still, since he paid for it, he never worried about how expensive it all might be and he flat-out avoided the generic brands or cheaper cuts of meat. Still, he wished there was a way to buy what he wanted without actually having to go to the store and deal with the other shoppers. He liked people most of the time, but it seemed like there was some rule that when someone was shopping for groceries, they had to be as inconsiderate and rude to other people as possible.
He glanced up from his magazine at the people in the line ahead of him, then noticed as a little old lady stepped in behind him with only a few purchases. With a small smile at her, he pulled his loaded basket back and motioned her ahead of him. "Go ahead, ma'am. I don't mind waiting and I'd hate to force you to wait for me when you have so little to purchase." Her smile and murmurs of gratitude made him feel good as she moved around in front of him, then he returned to his magazine. He always hoped that if he were nice enough to other people, his consideration would be contagious and spread until everyone in the world became a little more selfless. He loved it when people were nice, and often found himself randomly complimenting others on their clothing or hair, or helping other people without even thinking about it first. Of course, he didn't even try to reconcile that part of himself with the part that pulled pranks at school and tormented his teachers. He always just figured that his pranks were in good fun, never malicious and he always paid for any damages he might have caused.
He looked up again, noticing the line still wasn't moving, peering around at the check-out girl and the guy she was talking to, blinking as he realized they were both from his school. His gaze flicked to his basket, noting the large case of Fancy Feast on the bottom of the basket and the massive bag of litter on top of it. A soft chuckle escaped as he silently chided himself for being so vain, as if anyone would care that his aunt had a couple of cats. Besides, they were cute and he certainly spent his own time with one or both sprawled in his lap while he rubbed their tummies.
Kung Woo's eyes widened noticeably as Fawn practically shoved the whole box of Animal Crackers at him. He caught it, fortunately, and only a few of the little elephants and giraffes fell onto the grass, only to be picked up by greedy-looking squirrels a second later. Almost immediately after she gave up the snacks, she straightened up and announced that it was late and that they probably wanted to be alone. “But I really want you to come-” Kung Woo started to confirm, but Fawn was already dashing off, tripping over her own feet every few steps and chuckling nervously as she ran off…barefoot.
Turning back to Ashelin as she joked around about scaring the other girl off, Kung Woo flashed a sheepish grin, scratching the back of his head with one hand as he held the carton of crackers with the other. “To be honest, that’s not the reaction I was hoping for,” he chuckled nervously, feeling a little bad for Fawn. He must’ve really scared her to have her just run away like that.
As Ashelin – though a little reluctantly – agreed to go to Homecoming with him, Kung Woo’s smile brightened a few notches. “Awesome!” he exclaimed, really meaning it. Maybe now people would get off his back… Not that he didn’t like Ashelin as a friend, that was, but the whole crush thing was getting a little old.
x Kung Woo nodded and laughed a little, straightening up and dusting himself free of grass clippings and fallen leaves as Ashelin suggested that they went to Fawn’s house to return her forgotten shoes. Bending down a little, Kung Woo picked them up and hooked his right hand’s pointer and middle finger around the heel portion of the shoes so that he could carry them and the Animal Cracker carton. He’d, to be honest, never really tried Animal Crackers before – or maybe he did, and just didn’t remember them… - and really liked the little snacks. He’d have to go to Wal-Mart or somewhere, later, to buy some more of them.
Dumping a few more of the little yummy creatures into his mouth, Kung Woo turned on his heels so that he was facing where Fawn had run off to. “Leffes go, den?” he called over his shoulder to Ashelin, trying to suggest that they went off but not quite succeeding with his mouth stuffed. Laughing at himself and how funny he sounded, Kung Woo chewed and swallowed, waiting for Ashelin to stand before starting off in the direction Fawn sprinted off to.
There was hardly any silence on their stroll, but mainly because Kung Woo was feeling especially hyper – the Coke and Pixie Sticks he’d had during lunch were kicking in, now, and Kung Woo was definitely feeling the sugar rush. Every few blocks he’d set down the shoes and carton of crackers and do a cartwheel or a back flip or something of the sort, and then run back to retrieve the two goods and continue to walk. As he literally sprung off of the street light posts, Kung Woo found that he just couldn’t stop talking. “You know, everyone seems to think that I like you,” he straightforwardly said, not thinking much of it as he continued to chatter on, not giving Ashelin reaction time. “But I don’t. I mean, you’re a great person, and everything, but I don’t like you, like you. If you catch my drift.” Switching to an Australian accent to speak, Kung Woo continued, “So have you bought a dress yet, mate? Well, not mate. Because we aren’t squirrels. But you know what I mean.” Laughing, Kung Woo set down the crackers and shoes to do yet another cartwheel – the fifth in the last three minutes. Dusting his hands off and returning to where he’d left the carton and shoes, Kung Woo stuffed another few crackers into his mouth before picking both of the items up and continuing to blab anything that flashed in his head, not considering that no one could understand him at the moment because of his stuffed mouth. “Haff yew eva cried beatbosshing? Iss sssupuuur eessy.”
x And a few more one-sided conversations later, they were in front of where Fawn lived. Swallowing, Kung Woo brought up the carton to his eye and hungrily licked his lips as he peered into it. “Drat,” he mumbled, crushing the carton like it was nothing and stuffing it into his pocket, “All gone..” Turning to Ashelin, he flashed a smile and nodded towards the structure they were standing in front of. “I’m pretty sure this is where she lives,” he chirped, scratching the back of his head and looking at the structure through squinted eyes. “Want to ring the doorbell? I’m pretty sure my hands are filthy.”
                                    Saybrae took notice of when Jake leaned against the wall close to her, but said nothing of it. Instead, she took her arms out of her pocket, raising them in the air. "Halleluah! Finally someone asked the magic question!" She gave him a grin, for he didn't know what he had just gotten himself into. "Sports are my freind, so you can say i play...quite a bit." She brought her hand out to keep count.
                                    "W"ell, there's soccer, karate, rafting, hiking, basketball, baseball, track..." She gave him a rueful smile. "I'd play football if they'd let me too. I would SO own as a receiver..." That comment ended in a grumble, for she was still sore about that fact. "I guess you can say i'm the girl who is playing every sport alive, just because i think it's fun." Still sitting atop the wall, she gestured wildly at him. "But if your sport activity is just watching it while sitting on a couch...that you know isn't very good for you at all."
                                    She then laughed, as a musical instruemnt was mentioned. "You are looking at the one girl who failed recorder in 4th grade, keyboard in 5th, and can't even hit a triangle in one place." This was all true, for anyone who knew Saybrae was eveident of the fact for as much athletic ability she had, her musical talent was greatly lacking, to a point of straightout sadness. Saybrae was curious to why the boy asked such a thing, for it was in her experince that many didn't ask other's hobbies, unless they wanted to brag about their own. Hoping this wasn't the case, she gave him a hard stare. "What about you. At least you must have a talent or play an instrument."
She ran all the way home and through her door, then flopped back against it, staring down at her bare feet and trying to catch her breath, feeling like the world's biggest dork. Her head popped up when her father wandered out of his study and stopped to peer at her curiously, just the sight of him bringing a grin to her lips. She watched as his hands flowed through the motions of asking her where her shoes got off to and if she was alright, and she set her bag down to answer him in sign language. "I'm okay, Daddy. There was a boy and he asked me to Homecoming, I...sort of freaked out and threw cookies at him before running off without my shoes." He chuckled silently and moved over to give her a hug, then continued toward the kitchen with a final, signed. "Silly child."
She peered after him a moment, then sighed and picked up her bag, placing it on the table beside the door before climbing the stairs to her bathroom on the second floor, trying not to think about how big an idiot she made of herself. She plops on the edge of the tub and sticks her feet out, grabbing a wash cloth and wetting it in the warm water flowing from the faucet. She hums softly to herself as she washes off her feet, wrinkling her nose at all the dirt on them, reminding herself never to walk around barefoot outside ever again. "Not that it matters. I could forget to bathe for a year and it wouldn't make any difference, since I have a knack for acting like a total dork whenever a cute boy even looks at me. Gah! I didn't even say yes! I just...spazzed out, like usual. Fawn, you're going to end up a crazy old lady with a million cats and a goiter! See, you're already crazy. Quit talking to yourself!"
Noah let out a slight laugh. This girl was unbelievable. All he asked her was if she had a problem with dancing. He said nothing about- what did she call it? – a homecoming court. What was that anyway? A glance at the posters the girl had been carrying gave him a slight clue. So she was going against the Homecoming Royalty thing. So now it was starting to make a little sense. It made him wonder why someone would go against that. It happened to be one of his favorite parts of homecoming. Looking at the girl though, she seemed like the type to go against anything that involved someone be put in the spotlight.
Noah looked at the girl and smirked. ”Well for one, I never said that you should –what did you say? – waste your time voting for the prettiest people or whatever. I only asked if you had something against dancing. And two, just because you don’t like the Homecoming Royalty aspect, why are you going against the entire dance? If you think about it, the only reason we have the voting anyway is just because it’s tradition. You could still support the dance instead of going against it. Also if you all have such a big problem with voting for only the ‘beautiful people’ then don’t vote for them. Vote for someone you actually like.” He addressed everyone for the last part and then looked back at the girl with another smirk on his face. ”Or do you have a problem with that?”
This is my idea of fun!
She wants to go home but nobody's home
that's where she lies broken inside.
No place to go;
to cry her eyes broken inside
Danny woke up with the sun setting and the classroom empty and drool on her desk. She didn't know why she was still there. She didn't have a memory of what had happened in the class. Danny guessed that nobody even bothered to wake her up. Danny was a loner after all. No one talked to her and she didn't want to talk them either. Her parents still wondered why she had no friends. They never suspected that this century the world actually revolved around electronics and cell phones. Anything without communication was said to be a nobody. You never knew what was happening around the world. You'd never know the latest gossip in your town or school. No her parents wanted her to live a safe life where they were scared they would loose her in a fire and the reason that caused it was an electric shock.
Danny quickly packed her things and ran down the halls. They didn't look like the same hallways with nobody in them. Danny could feel her mouth starting to dry up. On her way out she saw a soda machine in the hall. She opened her red bag that had her name embodied on the side and took out the matching wallet. She had five dollars inside. Danny took a dollar out and put it into the machine. She was in the mood for a Coke and thats what she got. She quickly took the top off and drank while running out. She didn't bother checking what time it was because he parents wanted her home before the sky went completely black.
When Danny reached the front of the door and walked out she saw a boy sleeping on the steps. Danny had recognized him from one of her classes. She thought he was quite attractive but she didn't have a crush on him. She knew him and Krysta were basically a couple. Danny stepped down the stairs and stood on her knees so that she was his height. She smiled and watched his sleeping face. She wanted to wake him up before something happened and Danny would blame herself. Danny never had positive thoughts, she always thought the worst. Danny poked Brandyn in the arm to try to wake him up. "Hello, sleepy head. Wake up!" she said softly, still poking him in the arm. "Hello, in there."
Avery being lost in thought, jumped when she heard a voice saying 'hey!' to her. Looking to the direction of the voice, she almost gasped. She thought she was day-dreaming again, but it was real and in that car was Josh himself. "what do i say?" she thought, a little jittery. She felt like one of those obsessed girls who got into those girly moments and they scare off the boy. Looking at Josh with a sweet smile she answered "Hello there, yea i am from school, Im Avery" Walking closer to the car, she felt a little odd being in such ugly clothing and well she wasnt a model for say. "Well i was going to the mall and just window shop" she said softly, wondering if he really would give her ride. Avery probably had another good forty-five minutes of walking and even then the shops would be halfway done with closing.
Still smiling, she took a good look at Josh for the first time and thought he really was a charming boy. Of course there was still the fifty-fifty chance he had a date for homecoming. "I will just wait till later" she thought, her heart pounding at the thought that maybe she would really go with Josh. "Well Josh if you dont mind i could use a ride" she said, thinking that it was much faster by car than her own two feet, which were strating to hurt in these worn out shoes. Her smile stayed to her face, but underneath was a small frown just ready to burst. Avery knew she looked ridiculous with her too big of jacket and torn jeans. Worse was her hair was kept under an old-fashion hat that she got from the orphange.
Mark laughed as Krysta stood up. Who could blame him? Krysta was so incredibly different from most girls. If it weren't for her height, she could have passed for a six year old. She was the type to wear cutesy, little-girl things. Alongside the other girls at Serenity, she certainly stood out from the rest. He gave her an odd look at the 'im-poop' that's she'd added to the end of his name. He could have sworn she called him something differen every day. She stood there, rocking back and forth like a little kid. He only had gotten to actually know a handful of girls at his school, and in comparison to the others, Krysta was the most memorable.
Before he's met Krysta, Ashelin had been the friend that stood out most to him. She was the girl that he could relate to. She was constantly sneaking out of the house an away from her parents. Not unlike him, it seemed she was trying to get as far away as possible from her home. Mark couldn't blame her. Her parents were a little...controlling after all.
Krysta's antics with the mosquito were a rather bit amusing. "Good work. You killed it," he said in a light, joking tone. She asked him what was up, and he shrugged. "Nothing much, I suppose. There's just some cop lady who's pretty much stalking me. What about you? What brings you to the front lawn of these apartments?" he asked her in return.
Jake flinched back a trifle when Saybrae's arms launched skyward and she began going on about sports. His eyes widened as her list of activities trailed on for a good seven sports, and she even mentioned she would've played football had she been allowed. "Well, you sure are an active girl, Saybrae..." He said with a chuckle before hoisting himself onto the wall and sitting by her.
Her raised a brow when she confessed her lack of musical talent. He could relate to her, though, his failure with instruments stemmed from lack of practice. It sounded as though she just outright had no musical talent. "I never had the patience to learn an instrument nor the desire to ever practice." He confessed with a grin. "I'd wanted to be able to play Mozart and Beethoven right away." He shook his head. "I didn't like only playing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Mary had a Little Lamb to start off."
"Eh..." He started when she turned the conversation back to him, "I find I have a gift for cooking. Especially pastries and sweet things." He shrugged, looking at the sky,. "I have no idea where it came from. My mom wasn't ever the sort to cook elaborate meals." He laughed. "I suppose it's because I never can eat enough sweets." He looked back at her. "Do you cook?"
                              She allowed her face to stay in a scowl, obviously getting annoyed by this...teen's attitude. She tried to keep her cool, knowing that in front of a crowd one needed to have a somewhat civilized image. "So you're saying that you think zis can all be zolved zo zimply?" Inwardly Izzie cringed, for she tended to realize that her accent got worse the more emotional she was getting.
                              Ignoring this fact, she jumped down from the crate, and lowerd her poster. She was staring at the boy intently, to try and find some ounce of sensibitly. "I would gladly vote for zome student that iz not a beauty, but zadly it seems that the only people nominated for Court are beauties." She stood back, looking over at the crowd. "And that iz where ze problem lies! How can we expect to live in an equal world and student body life, if people like you," she pointed right at Derek, "Have that zort of attitude?"
                              A part of her hated being so out-right bold to a stranger, and a guy who relatively looks like he just was asking honest questions. But it was his attitude that threw Izzie off, his charismatic fakery trying to act like the good guy, suggesting alternatives, stealing her spotlight, stealing her influence over the people! She crossed her arms, biting down on her tongue. She tilted her head up, eyes never leaving his. "I don't have any problem vith voting for zomeone i like. Vat i have problems with is that the person i would like can't be voted on, because of natural beauties like yourself, who overshadow the middle-man."
                                    Saybrae raised an eyebrow in suprise, when Jake mentioned such a hobby. "Cooking...that is a rare hobby i have to admit." Saybrae didn't turn away, yet she didn't try to move closer as Jake jumped onto the wall as well. She did turn, and look in his direction. "Well...one can say i have tried to cook, and i do like cooking, at times."
                                    Oh the memories she had of trying to cook on her dad's birthdays. Whether it was cake or bread or a simple sandwhich, something always turend out wrong. She laughed, remembering an event not so long ago, when she was in middle school. "I believe my record was setting off the smoke alarm 5 times for one meal." She raised an arm and rubbed it against the back of her head nervously. "While me and my dad thought it was amusing, the fire department didn't." She omitted the part of the story where they almost banned her offcially from using an oven.
                                    With a sigh, Saybrae leaned back until she was near tipping over the wall, and hanging upside down. Her knees were lacthed onto the wall, her upper torso and head hanging down. Saybrae loved this feeling, of the blood rushing to your head. It made one feel alive she though. Away from Jake's line of vision, she closed her eyes, calling out to him. "Well, i guess one of these days you're going to have to tackle being my cooking teacher. I'm afraid i'll win award for worst student though already, i can tell you that." She then wrinkled her nose once again, at the mention of sweets. "But i'd only ask to not learn how to make little choco bals chocked full with cavities and diabetes." As she said this, her phone fell out of the fairly large and open hoodie pocket, to the floor below. Frowning, she opned an eye, and reached out for it blindly, streatching for the floor was about 6 feet under the wall where they were currently sitting. So much attention was being paid to resucing her phone, she didn't notice when her knees broke their grip with the wall, forcing her to give way, and start beginning her descent to the not so comfortable ground below.
Jake grinned when she commented on cooking not being a common hobby. "Yeah, well, I find it fun to do." He laughed, "Especially the part where you get to eat it." At least she didn't say it was a girly thing to do or something along those lines. He thought after a moment. Not that I would have really cared that much, though, it was a nice gesture on her part.
His eyes widened when she recalled a time where the fire alarm went off five times. "Wow." Was all he could say for a moment shaking his head. "Wouldn't you have thought to remove the batteries after the second time?" He said, his shoulders beginning to quiver from withheld laughter. "They can actually ban you from using an oven in your own home?" He asked, bewildered, shaking his head again.
He watched her curiously as she leaned back over the wall so that her legs were the only thing keeping her on it. "Feeling a little light-headed?" He asked, amused, as he peered down at her, his hair shading his face. "Oh, so I've been enlisted as your cooking tutor now? Do I need to get insurance before I start?" He asked, teasing her. At her request he replied, "And what's wrong with diabetes ridden foods, huh? With your active lifestyle, I doubt you need to be worrying about that sort of thing."
He watched with a raised brow as she grasped for her phone that was well out of her reach. He decided to let her do so for a couple moments before saying, "Don't worry, I'll get it," as he began to ready himself for jumping from the wall. Then, he suddenly saw her legs disappearing over the edge of the wall. He reached out, grabbing at her ankle, hoping to catch her. Sadly, her shoe was all that he grabbed, leaving Saybrae to fall to the ground below.
"Saybrae!" He called, jumping down to the ground beside her, trying to help her straighten out. "Please don't be hurt. Don't let there be a broken bone. Oh please..." He murmured frantically, looking for any sign of emotion from her, expecting to find pain in her expression.
Kari was quite surprised when Kyle suggested they actually do something. Her eyes widened in eager pleading. "I don't mind at all!" she exclaimed. This was exactly the kind of thing she'd been looking for. She wondered what he had in mind, that is, if he did have anything in mind. Kari certainly didn't. She was so out of the loop these days, it amazed her, as well as leaving her feeling rather deprived.
"So, what's the plan, Cap'n?" she asked, a toothy grin on her face. Whatever it was, she figured it would be something that Sylvester would never approve of, which made it even more exciting to her. She'd always been one to dream of adventure, and now, here was her chance. The park had been a good place to start after all.
Oh yeah! Avery. That was the girl's name. He really should be more social. Josh clicked the button on his armrest to unlock the doors. "Don't mind at all. I'm actually going there myself. Hop in", he said. It surprised him when she said his name. Was he getting popular without his knowing? 'Conceded little cow! You're not! So stop thinking like that!' he scolded himself. The way she was dressed didn't bother him. All he thought of it was that this was probably casual wear for her. "I'm going to bug you though. I'll be needing a feminine opinion for a gift and maybe you can help me." His mind was already thinking up certain things his parents might like. Nothing really seemed good for the occasion and maybe he could repay Avery for her opinion somehow.
He waited for her to get in the car before pressing the pedal and going down the street. There was no real rush anymore so he took his time to pay attention to the speed limits. It had been lucky for him nobody seemed to have noticed the black car almost colliding with every other parked car as he tried to rush home less than an hour ago. Josh had never been one for small talk and just hoped the car ride wasn't going to be uncomfortable.
Kung Woo had run off to work, and Brandyn was sitting alone on the steps again. He didn't so much mind. He was rather tired today. He'd been staying up late quite often the past few nights, and finally his energy was beginning to run low. Most of the students had left; only a few scattered people were still visible on the school grounds, most of them just talking with each other still deciding on how to spend their afternoon. Brandyn dozed off, his legs pulled up to his chest and his head resting on his knees.
He was abruptly pulled from his nap by a poke in the arm. As his eyes opened, he say a girl in front of him, telling to wake up. "I'm up, I'm up!" he said, and suddenly realized he was still sitting in front of the school. "Oh bother, I'm still here?" he asked sleepily, though to no one in particular. He looked back at the girl. "Hey there Danny. What are you still doing here?" he asked, realizing they were pretty much the only people in sight.
