Dinner - First Weekend

Limina Academy for Magical Creatures has been open for a week, and yet there are still students arriving from all around. Many of these students were either late arrivals, or otherwise had some sort of conflict that prevented them from getting to school on time (conflicts such as skeptical/worried parents and errors in the system). As for the other students, excitement towards their upcoming club meetings is building. To celebrate a successful club day, Verlyn has opted for a special feast on this Saturday night, similar to the opening feast held on the first day. There, students can mingle and meet the new arrivals; mischief is sure to ensue.

Meanwhile, on the darker side of things, Rey is re-grouping his followers and working on his plot to kidnap and/or poison the minds of several students. Though Prijka's capture earlier in the day foiled his plans to cause a scene at the club sign-ups, Rey is still hoping to rally his forces for another attack very soon. Fortunately for him, Prijka was able to escape largely unnoticed, so the school remains blissfully unaware that anything is wrong. While many parents, Aurors, and faculty are still skeptical about the entire idea of Limina, tonight promises to be a happy one, with new students meeting old and everyone enjoying a relaxing dinner before hitting their first homework assignments.

New arrivals are advised to check here to learn about their assigned dorms, and to ask any questions they might have about recent events here. Only time will tell what Rey's plans will mean for the school. Will this dinner (and the rest of the school year, for that matter) be a peaceful one, or is Limina doomed to be a failed project from the very first week?

After spending a large portion of the day cooped up in her office, Tessa now found herself emerging for dinner, knowing it would do her well to move around a bit. Though she was still rather sore (and still wore bandages on her throat to hide some of the more severe damage), the counselor had to admit that it was better for her students to see her than for her to remain hidden in an office. Already, she could tell suspicions had been raised when she had "fallen mysterious ill," and Tessa wanted nothing more than to reassure her students that they could feel safe at Limina... whether she personally believed it or not.

As she entered the hall, Tessa could see that not many of the faculty members had arrived yet. Taking time to wave at her children (who had both arrived already and appeared to be chatting with friends), the counselor made her way gingerly to her seat, trying not to jar her healing wounds too terribly. Feeling rather impatient and antsy all of a sudden, Tessa glanced at the clock.

I sure hope Ver gets here soon, she thought fervently, seeing that she'd arrived rather early for dinner. She would feel much better when he was nearby, for lately she'd been having terrible nightmares. Considering what Rey had put her through, Tess figured this was to be expected, but thinking about the images that flashed in her mind still sent shivers down her spine. Rubbing her arms as if to warm herself up, Tessa glanced around the room, trying to look comfortable and happy in front of her students while wanting nothing more than to go back to her quarters and rest some more.

Headmaster of Limina

ι sєє тv αɗs αвσυт ɗєтєʀɢєɴтs тнαт cαɴ ɢєт вʟσσɗ sтαιɴs συт σғ ʏσυʀ cʟσтнєs...

Limina's Headmaster Verlyn had finally gotten through the virtual mountain of paperwork that he'd had to do that day. For a while it had seemed as though every time he turned around there would be more of it, but finally he had been able to whittle it down. He was trying to not be late for the school dinner tonight, but he simply had to get all the paperwork organized and properly filed and tucked away in all the proper places. It would have been one thing if some of it had to be unavoidably left for the next day--and there were already a number of things on schedule for tomorrow--but all the paperwork that could be finished tonight, had to be. Especially since he had gotten so close to finishing already, he just had to go ahead and get it all cleaned up before going to dinner. Now if only he could be sure his tie would stay straight... standing up from his chair and pushing it in, he stepped out from behind his desk and shrugged his jacket to fall comfortably, straightening his tie and double-checking that he really had put everything away properly before leaving his office.

This week had been really trying, but now was not the time to dwell on negative things. Now was the time to smile and wave at the students in the halls, to ask if everyone was going to the dinner, to put the best foot forward and show the world that Limina Academy would not be derailed by the likes of Rey. That, and Rey's attack on Tessa was still a classified investigation that they did not want to alarm the students with if it could be avoided. Of course, Ver could not forget what the other vampire had done--and growled inwardly every time he thought of it--but he could not allow that man to change their plans, even if they might have to carry on with fewer students and staff than they had hoped to have this year.

Seeing Tessa already sitting at the faculty table just brought that up again. Most of his wife's bandages were hidden under her clothing, but Ver knew they were there. And the ones around her neck were inescapable. Ver felt another surge of anger at Rey welling up, but he pushed it back and made himself instead check his tie to see if it was straight, letting a genuine concerned-over-neatness expression fill his face instead of an angry one. Then filling his thoughts with how glad he was to have Tessa well enough to be in attendance, and the beautiful sight of the hall filling up with students, he smiled to see his children there with their friends and so many other students looking hopeful. He was truly proud of them all.

"Hello, Dear." Verlyn said to Tessa with a smile all for her, sitting down close by and giving her a kiss on the cheek. Speaking quieter so only she would hear, he added: "How are you feeling?"

Tessa brightened considerably as Ver arrived, chuckling a little at the tie he'd obviously spent a lot of time trying to straighten.

"Here," she said with a sympathetic smile, adjusting it for him so that it hung perfectly straight. Her smile quickly disappeared when he asked how she was feeling, however. "I'm okay," she replied with a sigh, absent-mindedly running a hand along the bandage on her neck. "I'm just a little tired."

Then, in an attempt to change the subject from her health (which she knew would only rile her husband up), Tessa added, "How've you been? Did you manage to get all of that paperwork done?" Tessa knew that Ver was far more concerned about how she was doing than his paperwork, but she didn't want to worry him any more than necessary. Hopefully, he'd get distracted by the conversation and stop dwelling on what had happened to her. Of course, her night terrors (which he had to have noticed) probably weren't helping on that front...

Part wild hunter, part curious intelligence.
If you assume you know how I'll react,
I may only become more unpredictable.

After the club fair, Zilah took a time-out away from being around so many people, turning back into her bird form and flying up around the school for a bit. Then she'd come back inside and perched up high in the rafters, waiting for the dinner to start. She was going to really try and sit with all the other students and eat with them this time.

When she saw people coming in and sitting down, Zilah flew down from the rafters and changed into her slender 6-foot humanoid form. She still couldn't stand to not have the air around her chilled, but was getting really good at confining the cold air to a narrow bubble of about 2 inches around her. She really didn't want to accidentally make people uncomfortable around her if she could avoid it.

There were many students already in attendance, but still plenty of empty spaces. Since she didn't really know anybody and was still nervous with large groups, she sat by herself for now--but there was plenty of room where she was, for other students to sit in. Quietly, to herself she murmured under her breath, practicing words that she had heard people pronounce a little differently than she had been doing. She had known the words, but not having been around people who spoke them, she hadn't had practice speaking them before coming to Limina. She had taken mental note of how they sounded that afternoon, and was now trying to make the way she formed the words sound the same.

Clubs. Cluuubs. "Clabs-no-Cluuhbs. Cluhbs." Tell. Telllll. "Tale, Tail... Tehl. Teh-ll. Tell." Please. Pleease. "Pleece? Pleezzz... no, Pleeze. Pleaz? Pleas." Thank. Thannk. "Taenk? Thhhanc. Thannnk."

It seemed to Zilah that most of her innacurate pronunciation revolved around the sounds made by an "h", even in places where there was not an actual letter "h" but where the vowels seemed to be pretending there was one next to them anyway.

Why does that sound give me more trouble than others? She thought to herself. She looked around, seeing more students entering the great hall. Even a dozen was a lot of people to her, and there were definitely more students than that here now. Zilah continued practicing more words. Where. Whhere. "Ware, Wear... Whhhare. Whare."

Half of me is a blank slate,
The other half is an iceberg of which
even I have only discovered the tip.

Outside the castle grounds, Emrys was making his way to the school in flight. He was flying as his animagus form, a raven in what looks like a dark and gloomy night. From the looks of Emrys, he doesn't have any belongings on him, from the eyes of the unknowing, but Emrys does have everything he needs on him, yet not in plain sight.

What makes Emrys' animagus form of a raven different from the rest is his eyes when he is in form. His eyes glow a bright red and sometimes the magic would steam a red haze from his eyes. His feathers were rather kept clean and there was no feather out of place.

Arriving at the boundary of the school, Emrys transformed into his normal self with bags and belongings in hand. He took care to check in with the care taker before entering school grounds. Then Emrys transfigured again for an entrance he had in mind.

>Skip Lapse<

Emrys flew to the great hall, expecting that is the place of dining and sustenance. Upon arrival of the great hall, in flight, the doors swung open and Emrys flew in, transformed in mid flight and landed on his feet with his bags and staff in hand. His appearance wasn't altered at the moment, so the students that may have read his books would recognize. Emrys stuffed his bags into his satchel that was strapped over his shoulder, bowed, signed a few books and sat with the other teachers and headmaster. Smiling, Emrys gave a sort of flirtatious gesture to the teachers as well as the headmaster.

Professor Penelope Velune (Pin-el-o-pee Vay-loon)
Werewolf
Professor of Mythical Studies

Penelope stacked her last stack of books on her desk and took a step back. Twenty identical copies of "Mythical Species Throughout History Volume 1" stared back at her. He classroom couldn't have been more ready for students. Posters with diagrams of different forrest creatures donned the walls, mobiles of flying beasts hung from the ceiling. Maybe it was overboard for students of this age, but she didn't care. It was her first year as a real teacher, and she didn't want to screw it up.

The grandfather clock in the back corner of the room chimed, signaling that the banquet dinner was about to start.
"Guess I'd better get going" She muttered. She glanced quickly in the dingy mirror by the door (strategically put there to prevent cheaters) and summer up her appearance. Her hair was pinned back in a tasteful messy but, it's red-brown tendrils making it so you could hardly see her distinct wolf-like ears. Her outfit: a knee-length olive green dress with a brown belt to accentuate her small waist. Not wanting to waste another moment, she left and made her way to the banquet.

When she entered, she was not expected there to be so many students! She was both elated and and immediately stressed. Large crowds made her anxious. But as she made her way towards the front where the staff sat, she over heard a girl with beautiful frost-colored features muttering to herself. She seemed to be alone, she Penelope gently put a hand over her shoulder.
"Welcome to Limina Academy" she smiled, "if you're nervous, don't be. This is my first time here too." Her violet eyes darted up to the teachers in the front. One of them, dressed in dark clothing, seemed oddly familiar, but she couldn't place where she'd seen him before.

spacerLooking around, Emrys noticed he didn't get much attention from the other professors. Maybe they're acting professional, Emrys thought and noticed he made a pun in his thoughts. But then Emrys noticed one of the professors gazing in his general direction. So, Emrys pulled off his hood for the female professor to get a better look. Then Emrys swooshed his hair as he flipped his head for a dramatic effect turning his black hair into a color of dark green.

Then Emrys stood and made his way to the female professor, and from the looks of her, she was nervous to be at the school. To alleviate that nervous projecture, Emrys pulled out a seed from his satchel and let it grow in his hand in front of the professor. The seed grew into mint, but Emrys transfigured it to be a rose and gave it to the professor. "Welcome. This is my first day as well." Emrys felt he didn't need to introduce himself since he had been in a few columns, articles and had a few mentions in other books by other authors.

Penelope warily watched the man approaching her, before forcing herself to give him a friendly grin. Standing her ground next to the female student, she turned as he came up to her. Before she could spit out a greeting, the rose grew from the seed in his hand. This was magic that she'd only read about. The town she grew up in after her thirteenth birthday was completely absent of magic folk. Everyday she had worn the same hat to hide her ears. For the first time since she was a child, her brown ears stood at attention, flicking every few seconds to pick up on the chattering students' conversations. Sometimes she wished she had abilities outside of turning into a rage-beast every month, but she had come to terms with it.

"That's quite impressive" she said, taking the rose carefully. What a ham, she thought, chuckling to herself. "Seems as though all of us will have to help each other then. New places can be intimidating, at least for me. Say, haven't I seen you somewhere before?" She inquired, glancing at him up and down and putting her free hand on her hip.

spacerEmrys smiled at his colleague. "You might have seen a photo of me in the papers or in one of my books. I am Emrys Sylvestris, professor of Transfiguration, author on the topic as well on topics herbology and chemistry. Although in the school, it wouldn't be called chemistry, it would be called Potions." Then Emrys pulled up his hood as he noticed some students were coming his way. Then Emrys took Penelope's hand. "Fame comes with a curse. Follow me to the rest of our colleagues." Emrys lead Penelope to the table that the headmaster and the rest were at. Then Emrys pulled out a seat for Penelope.

Then Emrys whispered into Penelope's ear before giving her a chance to sit down. "I think there is a potion to subside moonlit transformations. If you want some, then you're invited for a herb hunt. I heard that the supplies are hard to find." Then Emrys took a chair next to Penelope and sat down. Then to pass the time before food arrives, Emrys pulled out his famous tome and started reading it's pages, but the pages appear blank to everyone because of the charm he has on his book. He was on a page about werewolves, his notes on werewolves to be more precise.

Verlyn smiled at Tessa, glad his wife was always ready to help him keep his tie straight and present a good image as Headmaster of the Academy. How would he ever manage something like this if he'd never had her by his side? He gingerly put an arm around her for a light hug, doing his best to not put pressure on her worst wounds. She asked him about his paperwork. "Oh, there was SO much of it!" He made a wide gesture with both arms as though to indicate a room-sized heap of papers. "And more added all through the day! I didn't get to go to the club fair at all. I was truly afraid I wouldn't be able to both finish it and make it to dinner on time! Oh, guess what? Ivy suggested we add more sensors to our security system--brilliant, right? So I started the paperwork for ordering them so we can get it installed this next week."

While Verlyn was relating all of this toTessa, one of the new teachers came in and gestured a greeting. Ver responded with a smile and a nod, then finished what he was saying to Tessa while the new teacher got back up to go greet another. Then before Ver could start in on whispering to Tessa what the Aurors had reported in their meeting, or spend more time talking about security in a way that would be intended to reassure her but probably would only remind her more of her injuries, the two new teachers came up to the staff table together. If Verlyn had any doubts as to which of the new teachers this man was, it was settled in his mind with the reminder of the book that was on the man's resume, which he had just pulled out. Getting up to greet the two teachers properly, Ver approached them with a big smile on his face.

"Ah, Emrys Sylvestris, I presume? So glad you made it!" He offered to shake the wizard's hand, and turned his smile on the woman next to him. "Let's see... Ms. Velune, isn't it? He gave a small yet somehow overly-hammy bow. "I'm Verlyn Ramsey, Headmaster of Limina, and my wife Tessa," He gestured a wave towards Tess. "the school Counselor. We're so glad to have you here!"

spacerEmrys stood up to meet Verlyn's handshake. "It is a pleasure to be here. I did hear some rumors about some lovely bats running this school." Of course, Emrys was referring to both Ver and Tessa. Then Emrys went back to his book, locked it under key and faced back to Verlyn, then to Velune. "That's a nice name, Ms. Velune." Then something caught Emrys' mind, Verlyn looked a bit worried under his voice. "Headmaster, are you alright?" Emrys knew something was on the man's mind, but didn't know quite what to be exact.

Awhile waiting for his answer, Emrys helped Ms. Velune to her sit and was trying to be as polite as he can be. Then Emrys smiled to Tessa hoping to bring up her spirits. "Even on a rainy day, the birds still sing," Emrys thought the proverb would help in addition to his smile.

Part wild hunter, part curious intelligence.
If you assume you know how I'll react,
I may only become more unpredictable.

Zilah saw someone fly in, changing from a bird to a human form as he alighted on the floor. Another bird? Is he young, to be a smaller bird? But I don't know what kind that is, maybe it's the type. I need to learn what all the types are. Are people surrounding him because of the kind of bird he is? Zilah couldn't help but wonder as she went back to quietly practicing words, feeling like there were already too many people in this room despite the vastness of the space and how much of it was still open. How many more will come?

She felt the subtle localized change in temperature first, as a warm hand entered her bubble of cold air, then touched her shoulder. On the edge of surprise that she had been getting too absorbed in her own thoughts to have been alert enough to notice sooner, Zilah almost changed back into her bird form. The person might have --very briefly-- thought it felt like they were touching feathers, soft and smooth yet crisply icy in temperature. it was only for a very brief moment, however. Zilah managed to hold to her humanoid form since in immediately looking at the person whose hand touched her shoulder, she saw a non-threatening, friendly-seeming person with a lovely color of eyes and soft warm hair. "Welcome." Zilah echoed back, with a small smile. Now would this be an adult person? A teacher, maybe? She had been finding that human-shaped people came in so many sizes and shapes and colors that it was difficult to tell age or position, (even gender) based solely on size and coloring. But this seemed like a female, and though not taller than herself and some of the other students, spoke as though she might be older or in more of a leadership position.

The bird man (who had sat at the staff table, therefore he must be a teacher and therefore that much more likely to be an adult) came back down to speak to the one by Zilah. She watched with interest as he did a very pretty little bit of magic. Growing things were immensely fascinating to her, having grown up where there was hardly any plant life at all. Zilah also noted the ears that now showed on the lady-teacher.
Ah, what kind of creature must she be, then? Mammal, yes?

Zilah noted that the man introduced himself as a professor, along with his name and specialties. Surely she would be in one of his classes, and have much opportunity to talk to him later. The lady, also, though Zilah had no idea what she must teach. She watched them go back up to the staff table, then looked around with renewed interest in the variety of people around her. She was determined to not back out like she had at the first dinner she'd tried to attend here, even if she ended up surrounded by people. After all, she had managed to even talk to some at the club fair. Zilah didn't sing, hum or whistle in this form--not yet, anyway--but in her head she imagined the musical sounds of ocean waves and icebergs, which for her served the same purpose as humming to herself would have done as she kept looking around, her head tilted curiously.

Half of me is a blank slate,
The other half is an iceberg of which
even I have only discovered the tip.

OOC: In the great hall, waiting for the dinner to start and looking around at everyone already there until someone else comes to talk to her.

Dex Alderwood
Puppet
Student

Dex strolled into the banquet hall confidently, a large grin smear across his face as he examined his surroundings. In appearance, he appeared perfectly human. No ears. No tails. No odd colorings. Just a human. His platinum blonde hair brushed in front of his dark honey-colored eyes. His casual plaid button-down came down to his wrists-wear the sleeve barely covered the scribble of black that was permanently imbedded in his skin.

It had been weeks since his last incident. He just had to be more careful. He mustn't do anything that the Master wouldn't approve of. Sometimes that is hard to catch, though.

With a brown back pack swung over his shoulder, he scanned the area for a place to sit. He had just arrived, and didn't want to be late so he skipped dorm check-in. His eyes couldn't help but notice a young lady with startling blue features. Since she appeared to be alone, he approached her. "Hi there!" He beamed, taking the seat next to her. Already he felt the chill that surrounded this girl, but didn't think much of it.
"My name is Dex. Dex Alderwood. What's yours?" He eagerly waited her reply, but let his eyes dart over to the staff table. A young female teacher and an older male had just taken their seats. It was hard to tell because of the clothing, but he knew who he was and recognition filled his eyes. Emrys Sylvertis! He was a big fan of his writings. He looked back at Zilah. "what's your schedule look like? Maybe we've got some classes together!"

Penelope Velune
Werewolf
Teacher

Penelope was feeling a little uneasy from the man's closeness. She didn't let people in her space so easily. She also wasn't so sure of the remedies he'd spoken of. She had spent years trying to figure out how to make her transformations less dramatic, but to no avail. Her go-to method now is to chain herself up on a full moon, because she knew her transformation would be too enraged to figure out a way to unlock herself.

As Verylyn came towards them, Penelope stayed silent but kept a pleasant smile. "Pleased to meet you. I am very excited to start teaching" She chirped. She looked to Tessa. "I hope we can all find some time to get to know each other." At Emry's politeness, Penny grew more and more restless. She wasn't used to this kind of attention, and she wasn't sure she was a fan. She stood up almost as fast as she sat down. "I'll be back. Please excuse me."

She had a little hustle in her walk, brushing past Zilah and Dex, feeling the cool air that seemed to surround them. She entered the bathroom and immediately washed her hands, something she did when she felt especially uneasy. She turned off the water and stared into her reflection. Get it together, Penelope. You're an adult now. You can't be having these episodes just because you're on your own in a new place.

The voice inside her head was that of Penelope's twin sister, Marie, who disappeared years ago. She was always the more dominant one. It made sense that her subconscious would sound like her, giving her pep talks. It was traumatizing, having a twin taken away. That unique bond she had was no more. She filled her hands with cold water and splashed it on her face.
