ED

OutOfCynide:

»Ed tilted her head a little with looking at the boy with a question expression. The boy seemed like he was nervous, just by the way he was just looking at her. It reminded Ed when people had to go in front of a crowd and present a speech but you get nervous when you see the crowd.

What do you call that? Stage fright, that’s right.

You can call me Ed by the way. What’s your name? Ed introduced with a small smile.

Her smile faded once he continued to be in silence. Ed heavily sighed like she always did.
This boy has the worst of stage fright…

If you’re not going to tell me your name, then I’ll have to call you whatever I want. Ed said casually as she poked the boy lightly on the shoulder.

How do you like Tibbles? Ed asked with a soft smile, hoping that he would utter a word besides, thank you.

Nathan

Nathan clenched his jaw tight for a second, then finally said, "I'm Nathan. Nice to meet Ed." He could've been normal and made a conversation, but no more woulds could form off his lips. He gave a meager smile to show that he meant well.

»Ed chuckled with a small smile. Now she didn’t have to call him a ridiculous nickname. But she knew how it felt to be shy around people, or at least when she was in a crowd of people. When Ed was a child she had the same problem. It didn’t help when people would act like she was just a log that they ignore that so happened to be in the classroom with them. The way Ed had got over her shy problem was growing up and just ignoring the people who choose to ignore her. Easy as that. But in the process of getting over her shyness, she grew an oddity trait.

It’s nice to meet you too Nathan. Ed replied.

Now the silence…

More silence…

Ed began to feel an awkward silence fill the air. Ed decided to try and make a conversation.

So, what are your interests that you are interested in? Ed asked calmly lightly rolled her shoulders back.

Nathan replied, a little shyer now, "I play guitar and piano." Nathan wondered how he hadn't walked away by now, and was now trying his best to answer within a reasonable amount of time. "I also like to play soccer," he added shyly.

»Ed’s musical abilities were learned over her years in her childhood. She first learned how to do the piano from her mother, she learned the bassoon and ukulele from her father and the cello from her grandmother. It was an interesting group of instruments for one to know. Ed loves music, or anything to do with the arts. Although most of the time she doesn’t openly say it to people.

You play piano? I do too. How often you play? Ed asked kindly, hoping to carry on the conversation.

When she plays an instrument, it’s only because she’s overcome with an emotion. For instance, when Ed plays the piano, she’s most likely really sad or angry. When Ed plays the cello, she’s just angry. Ed usually doesn’t sound as good when she’s sad though. In fact, it’s hard to even think of Ed showing any emotion besides mellowness and happiness.

Sitting in bed, Lox stares out the into the courtyard and thought about the school. "This school, I feel...there's gong to be a lot of changes, a lot of trouble, a lot of adventures.", he thought. Lox was hoping he'd see someone outside but, the day was just plain and class was going to start very soon. Feeling no emotion towards the school and the students, he fell asleep as he always did; motionless and quiet. The daylight from the otherside of the thick blinds dimly shown on his pure and innocent face, but from afar, his body was nothing more than apart of the shadows that seemed to absorb all hope.

Okami leaned against the bark of tree and closed her eyes. A light song wafted out from her open window. She looked back on what had already happened in the day so far, recounting her clumsy encounters, from tripping over the silver-haired boy to running into the tall, scary boy. Her mind lingered upon the tall boy and his peculiar manner.
He seemed so... Reclusive. And antisocial. I wonder why?
She tried to retrace the image of him in her mind, stopping at his face, which she had only gotten a couple glances at; he was too intimidating to actually look at. Opening her eyes, Okami began to sketch out the tall boy from memory.

Nathan answered, "As much as I can really. I improvise more often than learn songs." Nathan wanted to go somewhere now, maybe the music hall, maybe to the food court. He couldn't make up his mind, so he finally spoke out, "I'm kind of hungry, but if you want we can go to the band room." He felt a little bit better now that he had begun to feel a little bit more secure.

OutOfCynide: Sorry for the short post, I kinda lost all feeling in my middle finger from a injury.

»I usually stick with the songs that I learn. I don’t think I improvise that much anymore. Ed said as she looked at her boots for a moment before looking back up to Nathan.

It’s good that he was starting to carry on the conversation. Ed wanted this boy to get out of his shell or hallowed box and smell the fresh air. So once he offered if she wanted to go to the band room, she felt she was making progress.

The band room sounds nice. I can see if my bassoon made it here alive. Ed said with a light smile.

Nathan stood up, and stretched his back, a pops surprising him. He held out a hand for Ed, out of courtesy. She was growing on him, and whatever she was doing was getting him out of his corner, but he still felt the shyness with him. He was already formulating what he would play on the piano, the keys in his mind, his mind the perfectly tuned instrument.

OutOfCynide:

»Ed looked at Nathan’s hand as he held it out for her. It reminded her when those men in the ballroom would escort the women to a dance. She never was escorted someplace before, it sounded fun. So Ed accepted Nathan’s hand and they began to head for the band room. The band room was located pass a few of the hallways which required them to make the occasional turn here and turn there.

It was a few minutes later until they reached the band room. The door was closed but unlocked, so Ed was able to open the door when she reached the doorknob. The band room was quite large and spacious. In the center of the room was a pedestal and stand in front of the pedestal where the composer would be. Then facing the pedestal was rows of arched chairs with stands in front of them. At the right of the band room were lockers with small bars that varied in sizes, from the smallest for a flute case to the largest being a tuba case. Then at the left side of the room was a black ballroom piano with a leather cover to preserve its glossy look.

Ed walked over to a locker about the size of a packaging box. She inspected the inside of it and opened the locker with no lock. She then pulled out the black case and placed it on the ground. She flipped the lock ends up and opened the case. Inside was a Schreiber maple bassoon, Ed’s first bassoon.

Nathan quietly walked to the piano, and slowly pulled off the cover, amazed by the quality of the instrument. He sat at the the keyboard, removing the sliding piece that was laid over the keys to protect them. The black and white keys looked like they'd never been used before, and he ran his finger along one, the smoothness compared to his piano back home was like determining the difference between a whale and a mouse. He barely paid attention to Ed as his fingers began to play a song that he seemed to remember, and he was soon entranced in his handiwork, nobody to control his pace, as he was the one to do so, nothing to stop him from playing what he wanted. He suddenly stopped, silent as he was before, as he looked down at the piano, enthralled by reality once more.

OutOfCynide:

»Ed’s eyes shifted from her magnificent bassoon as the sounds of the ebony and ivory keys echoed in the band room. The song sounded so beautiful. The notes sounded perfect in comparison to the tempo and rhythm that perfected the song. Ed wanted to play her bassoon but it would probably butcher the beautiful song. The playing reminded Ed of when her mother used to play.

Ed closed the case and placed it back in her locker. Ed closed the locker door and walked towards the other side of the room where the piano was being played by Nathan. Ed stood by the side of the piano watching. Once the song had ended Ed lightly clapped.

That was quite a work of art. Ed commented as she took a seat next to Nathan on the piano stool.

Her eyes scanned the keys for a moment before she placed her fingers on the keys. Soon her fingers began to quickly play out in a fast pace. Her thoughts were completely focused on the note ahead and the next note ahead of that note. Her hands began at a tempo of 205 until a few seconds at the end, she sped up gradually until her hands were working perfectly at a BPM of 250.

Nathan began to catch the rhythm of the song. He enjoyed the fast pace, even though he liked a slow tempo. As he listened, he got to know the girl through how she played, the accents bringing out her compassion, the precision showing her care. He felt something in him, but it was more of a curiosity. He wanted to describe it as a curiosity in her, and decided that was it. He prepared himself for another song, one that can't be played alone.
