The Official Shounen Jump Naruto website ([X]) describes it as this:
In another world, ninja are the ultimate power, and in the Village Hidden in the Leaves live the stealthiest ninja in the land. Twelve years earlier, the fearsome Nine-Tailed Fox terrorized the village and claimed many lives before it was subdued and its spirit sealed within the body of a baby boy. That boy, Naruto Uzumaki, has grown up to become a ninja-in-training who's more interested in pranks than in studying ninjutsu.. but Naruto is determined to become the greatest ninja ever!
But what is Naruto to us? Naruto, written by Masashi Kishimoto, started in 1999 with over 400 chapters so far is an epic. It has it's ups and downs. It's a story of an underdog, of friendship, of power hungry blindness and betrayal. It's a story about finding a path, a goal, your ninja way, and sticking to it.
Naruto is the story of a young boy with no friends and no family, who falls in love with a girl, befriends an avenger, discovers a teacher, and then fights destiny itself as each of those things begins drifting away.
It's a coming of age story for the world's most dedicated underdog. It is Naruto.

Naruto Uzumaki
The Orphaned Boy; The Tempest Child, The Fish Cake Fool
Naruto has always been alone. He never knew a parents love, a siblings rivalry, a friends smile. In his loneliness, Naruto became a class clown, preferring to bury his sadness inside him and give the world a smile. More than anything he wants to prove his worth to everyone everywhere and his greatest dream was to become Hokage.
Team 7 was the best thing that ever happened to Naruto. He girl he had always adored, but who never gave him the time of day, Sakura, was there. For the first time Sakura saw him for who he was, and he was able to see her clearly as well. Despite the rocky start between them, Naruto discovered some one precious to him there. Sasuke, his brother, his rival, his friend, his other half was joined in Team 7, as well as Kakashi.
There is something to be said about Naruto. He is loyal to the bitter end. Whether or not someone is cruel to him, hurts him, leaves him, he'll stand by them and fight for them. Naruto does not give up. He is impossibly kind and impossibly strong.

Sakura Haruno
The blooming Flower, the Day dream girl, the Fist of Logic.
Sakura is easily the most human character in Naruto. She was a shy, quiet, friendless girl with no friends. Her first and best friend held her hand and let her begin to bud. But in the way of middle school drama, she and Ino had a falling out over a boy. But it was in Team 7 that Sakura bloomed.
Sakura was a regular Sasuke fangirl, no one can deny that. She blushed when he spoke her name, was crushed when he turned away from her. But through Team 7, maybe it became more. When Sasuke left, Sakura would have done anything to make him stay, but he left her anyway. She was crushed.
But if there's one thing Sakura has shown the world, it's that you can always try again. When she was too weak, she went to training. She Sasuke pushed her away, she came back. Sakura is growing. She is blooming. Her romance for Sasuke is questionable now that she's matured, but her dedication is not. Sakura is strong willed and strong minded. She can keep anyone in line, but her smile out melt an ice berg.

Naruto and Sakura is a couple that shows that first loves are not only loves, that love and second sight is just as sweet, that some affection only grows stronger with time and that unending devotion exists.
Whether it's the emotional bond, the prevailing parallelism to Tsunade and Jiraiya or just the plain old development, NaruSaku is like a parfait, lots of layers and very sweet.
