Well, every time he TRIES to help, he messes something up.

Ex: He saw the stuck walker in the creek. If he hadn't let it see him, it wouldn't have gotten out and killed Dale.

If he hadn't fired at Shane, the horde wouldn't be coming.

It's all about him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I don't hate Carl, but just like any other child trying to outgrow themselves, he's a bit of a nuisance. I don't blame this on him as a character and I don't blame it on the writers, because I feel like he is supposed to be portrayed in that manner.

Well, if Carl would have said "Dad, Shane's a zombie" Rick could have turned around and stabbed him. And maybe Shane's gunshot would have been muffled enough that the zombies wouldn't have heard it.
But I think they wanted to make sure Carl shot zombie Shane, since it pays homage to the comic.

Personally, I just find the kid annoying. He makes really stupid decisions. Although I don't blame him on that 100%... someone should be keeping an eye on him instead of just letting him run around free in a zombie infested world.
