I heard from somewhere - forgot where- that they call them walkers because it's in a universe where they don't know the term 'zombie'. Something like that.

It's because the "zombies/ walkers" aren't able to move faster than a shuffle, what would you call them, besides zombies?

The walking dead takes place in a world were George A. Romero never created his famous zombie films. Other zombie films and books also do not exist.

Rule number 1 of any zombie series or movies also seems to be that zombies may never be referred to as.. zombies.
