*Spoilers, if someone didn't figure it out... V
I always saw the good in him.
He deeply cared for his daughter. When Michonne had her, it was one of the first (if not the first) times you see him vulnerable. Since then, they've been dehumanizing him more each episode.
When Andrea and Milton betrayed him, he seemed genuinely hurt. He had several chances to kill Andrea before the last episode and he didn't. He seemed to care about her and wanted her to stay loyal to him.
I also think he was hoping Milton would kill Andrea so he would accept him back -albeit, not trust him again.
I think when he finally killed Milton it was the last straw for him. He was the last link to his previous life and all he had left.
I've always loved the "bad guys" in movies though, ever since I was a kid. There's more to a person than just "evil." There's pain and rage that show themselves in interesting ways.
I hope they humanize him more before they kill him off.
