Some friends of mine and I had a long discussion about this one day and we came up with two starters...
In the first one some men go researching an old, shut down nuclear power plant (in our little story it was located in the area of former USSR but that doesn't really matter so much) and get the infection from there, spreading it to their village as they return.
In the other version we had some researchers working in the southpole and one day they discover some old bacteria/virus they haven't encountered before from some deep sections of the ice. That bacteria/virus is, of course, the thing that makes people turn into zombies, and the time before the infection starts actually showing any symtoms is long enough for some of the researchers to get back to their homelands, where they then start spreading the infection...

So, pick my answer from there.

and they do not know the full effects of what they are doing
researcher then gets infected with his/her own creation and then becomes one of the geeks.
and then infects their partner and then so on and so forth....

I have no ******** idea on how viruses and infections works so i dont know how the biology would have to be to make zombies, but if i had any guess would be some pandemic flu that make people go nuts/rage like.
Maybe some human mutated virus/bio weapon or just good 'ol nature ******** with us.

Zombie Virus... is half natural and half man made.

It's Vampire DNA which is ALTERED in the labs (by man) and injected into animals for testing.

Purpose: To extend the life of mortals.
Side-Effect: Increased aggressiveness.

i'd guess one of three possible sources:

-genetics (due to gene thearpy gone wrong)
-failed government experiment
-or the most likely source: mutated virus creating (living) zombies like in 28 Weeks Later

i'm just saying that it would be likely to be a government's (not nessacarial America's) experiment, rather then a private company's or another drug company's experimental medication, due to the fact that any government has more possible disease/dangerous substance that it can use/obtain easily and, thus, accidental create zombies
