Shane wanted to die.
He was deteriorating as a human being and he knew it.
But that doesn't mean he was a COMPLETELY awful person.
After all he did legitimately care for Carl and Lorri.
I believe that's why he was taunting Rick so bad...just to get him to

I do believe he wanted to die as well.
He was loosing his grip on reality.
But I think that although he cared for Lorri and Carl that was as far as his sights went and in an end-of-the-world situation you need as many allies as you can get.
All he cared about was what was in his direct sight, even though it wasn't truly his.
But he took the cowardly way out, it shouldn't have been Rick's job to off him.
Because Rick truly did not want to, he tried to save him multiple times and Shane gave him no choice.
At some point or another he might have even become a danger to Lorri and Carl.

It was that Lori went to Shane after she turned Rick against him and told him that she was sorry for everythign that happened and that she was thankful he was there.

Her apology was basically a goodbye. Shane knew that, and it crushed whatever small hope he had inside him. That's why he flipped out. That's his fault, not hers.
