a newscaster at the time said it had 'upholstered hips', to make her waist look smaller. I don't know exactly what that dress was made of or it's design, but I thought it was terrible.

I thought the dress was a wonderful blend of the current fashion whilst still holding on to the royal aspect of the wedding. After all under current law she will be the next queen of England. You think the next Queen of England isn't going to have a 10 foot train? PLEASE. She still had a very modern plunging neckline which they covered with lace sleeves which was a way to stick to the modern times whilst still appeasing appropriateness snobs that attend these events. If you remember Diana's dress from the 80s that thing was ghastly but it was very 1980s just with a giant train.

I agree completely. Ahem. I hate to correct you but the plunging neckline covered with lace sleeves is Victorian not modern. And while im correcting you, the "giant train" is typical for VIP's and royal weddings. Actually not even, my grndmother had a 10ft long train and she was just a german pastry chef.

Also, Diana's dress wasn't THAT bad. And its not 80's its more 40's. Yes it was WAY over the top but it was iconic!

Victorians did not show that much cleavage until at least the latter part of the 18th century with the fish tail and s-curve dresses, but that is still modern compared to earlier ideas that her dress appeared Gothic.
