Of course it wasn't.
It was a children's book. It was about a hobbit that helped a rag tag group of dwarves get their home back from a dragon. The Lord of the Rings was about a lot more then that. A lot more.
You cannot even compare the two, the Hobbit is fantastic but is no lord of the Rings.

why does everyone always say that when people say LOTR was better?
Honestly, I felt The Hobbit film was all over the place, without a central focus, for the first half of the movie. Jackson was so bent on adding the Silmarillion he forgot to integrate things smoothly. I had to see the movie two times to not be confused, and I'm usually pretty darn good at following story lines, even when they deviate.
It's great that the Silmarillion was added in, but 95% of it was shoved into the first hour. The story didn't settle onto it's haunches until Rivendell.
Too many concepts and side ward plots were being forced out in too little of time, at the very beginning of a new adventure.
