Why didn't they make "The Hobbit" before all the Ring movies?
My grandma asked that, not me. And I can't think of a reason.

It hung in production limbo for a while because of an issue with getting the rights. Guillermo del Toro of Pans Labyrinth fame was actually supposed to direct it but dropped out to work on other projects.
