You don't need it. The Hobbit takes place before the Lord of the Rings.

The Hobbit is basically a prequel to Lord of the Rings.

Some of the characters are the same, or at least present in both, but the main character in the Hobbit are not the main character in Lord of the Rings (Unless you decide to count Gandalf as a main character, but that's neither here nor there).

Some of the actors in lotr make cameos, some have larger roles (like Gandalf) but yes it's a prequel.
