I really didn't like the book very much either. lol
It took me like three months to finish reading The Hobbit and no, it wasn't just because of Murkwood. I find Tolkien's narrative style to be very very dull and so that really slowed down my drive to continue reading it. The only part that I wasn't totally bored at was the riddle game between Gollum and Bilbo.
