OMFG5KTOGO!!!! O:
Wow, thanks for all the supprt everyone. biggrin

And as for it not being apropriate, we had to write another paper about what we'd like to be when we grow up... I did a fairly good one then (German teacher) ... This one kid honestly wrote a paper about being a porn star... And Nabokov is not suitable... stressed
My English teacher would have let me done it, I'm sure, and I'm an effing freshman in highschool. xD

***** is a touchy subject, though, and probably one most would like to stray clear of. That is, unless I'm misinterpreting what the book was about?

That is totally different. In fact, it's incomparable.

When dealing with history, I don't think it's ever appropriate for anyone to censor it. If kids can watch Schindler's List in high school, they should be able to write about an author who wrote a book dealing with the subject of *****, in my opinion.

I would try to convince your teacher to let you write it anyway.

First and foremost, nothing is incomparable. I could compare his problem to a bowl of marbles, if I truly felt like it. However, comparing Lolita to pornography in this instance is a good analogy. Pornography is inappropriate due to an adult nature, and Lolita is inappropriate due to an adult nature. This is public school we're talking about, not a thesis for his Master's.

You are welcome to believe that no one should censor history, but when looking at the school system today, that is an idealistic and unreasonable wish.

EDIT: My opinion in this particular thread has been invalidated. If students are allowed to write about porn stars in school now, then Lolita is acceptable.

And I feel old.

No, it's ***** at its finest... But its just written so well... It's got this whole inner-turmoil battle going on and it's just amazing.... I've read it only twice, but I've been glued both times...

Honestly, this was just a paper about the history aspect of it. All of the things it changed simply by existing and being spread. I wasn't going to be talking about any of the actual *****. Just things like the town in Texas, the book written about the reading of it in Iran... Those sorts of things.

Well, obviously you can compare it to anything.

Regardless, the paper would be more about the author. It wouldn't be like an analytical essay on the book itself. Obviously, the author made such an impact for writing it, but the paper would deal more with the aftereffects, not the book itself.

I've edited that post to reflect how my original opinion has been invalidated due to what shall henceforth be referred to as the Pornstar Paper.

And I'll grant you that Lolita was a much better read than Reading Lolita in Tehran.
Closed minded.
Either that she hates Russian people.
Probably both.
I've found out that adults nowadays are still freaked by the Cold War.

You don't know anything about the loli 'fashion', do you? Other than its name? The book didn't cause a fashion evolution... Just because its called lolita doesn't mean it has anything to do with it.

The main oekaki program is called OekakiPotato... but does it have anything to do with potatos? Absolutly not! lol.

Sorry... I get spastic when people don't seem to understand.

But anyway. I do think your teacher was wrong to do that. Lolita IS a very good book and Nabokov did a good job with it. It did have an impact on people.

I wrote a detailed essay about Vlad the Impaler last year and that passed... I'm sure an essay on Nabokov would pass here, too. Probably because the teachers never actually read the essays and such and don't seem to really care. lol
Well.....if it fits the criteria then you should be able to write about him.
i get you point im in 8th grade and i read books that i shouldn't be reading and ive had teachers make very funny faces that shows that they're disgusted and if i had to do a book report the teacher would probably want me to choose another book to do it on

........stupid teachers.......

Thank you for your completely irrelevent beginning post... I really appreciate you talking about something that is completely besides the point.

Anyway, Vlad the Impaler must've been an interesting one to write. Maybe I'll be able to find a point where that'll work for me...

And thanks again, I really do appreciate all of this everyone! I mean, you might not be killing my teacher or getting her to let me write this paper, but you sure are making me feel better. heart
