I'm not surprised. The foundation of human treatment of domesticated animals is the ability for people to see human-like patterns in less intelligent life. But the obsession with animals as precious pets is based on the human ego's ability to recoup a lack of earned regard and intimacy with unconditional dependency and undue attention.

And as far as almost every ethnic group in the world is concerned, Black people are of the lowest human value. As such, the human-like patterns and agency perceived in pets are of a greater value to most people than the actual ignored or removed humanity of Black people.
