I am a young woman looking to buy my first car. I want something small, like a tiny little toyota or something. My requirements are this: it has to be easy to handle and it has to get good gas mileage.
Mazda MX5 or the min and the minis are not bad. The fiat 500 might be worth looking in to.

I always recommend a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic. Both are common and are cheap to purchase and to own.
Small, feminine, good on gas?

Toyota Echo/Vitz/Yaris, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, Honda Fit, Honda Civic, Suzuki Swift/Forsa/Chevrolet Sprint/Pontiac Firefly/GTi, Saturn SL, Mazda Protege, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Elantra.

Those should suit you.

No, I'm afraid not. lol This is America, those cars are far too fuel efficient! Micro cars don't usually fit in too well in most places here in the US. In the world of SUV's, pick-up trucks and giant "sportscars", they aren't really large enough to be picked up in the larger blind spots of these larger vehicles. Sadly, I love the smaller cars, so in terms of daily drivers, I hope the country finally makes the intelligent change over to small, less congesting cars.

Also, I vote for a nice Yaris, Honda Fit, or My personal favorite, the Ford Fiesta and Focus hatchback.

We're a young country that still treasure power, and spacial practicality over traffic control and financial practicality. I think it's more of a lust vs. value conflict. Everyone knows that we're a very heathenish, "do what we want" kinda of country.

It's not everyone I admit, but it's got this rash aggression that I kind of enjoy. I'm not stuck-up enough to say that it's the best.
Your best bet is to get a small car from the mid 2000s. Ford Focus, VW Golf, Chevy Cobalt, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Dodge Neon and Toyota Yaris are just a few. There are dozens of cars that have a good balance of price and fuel economy perfect for a daily commuter. I'd recommend you stay away from the Toyota Corolla though, because every one I have known that has owned one has hated it. Another important thing you need to consider is to not buy a small car from the 90's or earlier. Not only are they death traps in terms of collision safety, but also after about 10 years of age, a car is going to start having problems due to its age.
Toyota Corolla, or Honda Civic. Weather its early 90's, or late 2000s, (in most cases) these two car models will far exceed their price and maintenance cost in terms of durability/reliability.
