Usually I never look at a dealer's posting, but this looks pretty nice, and a good deal compared to what private sellers are wanting, for similar low mileage VR6 GTIs. Is it worth checking out?

I noticed they have it listed as a 4 door but it's a 2 door. (just a minor mistake) Also, I have no idea how dealerships work... do I get a loan? Finance with them, or just pay them in cash? Or swipe my card of $5,999? Interest rates? APR idk nothin mann... -_- I kinda want to build my credit, as I've paid many many months at furniture stores, Best Buy, a car stereo shop, and a jewelry store. Is a dealership the way to go? Similar ~100k VR6's go for 5-8k in my area, sometimes molested with race clutches, dumb wheels, and unattractive modifications... Red isn't my ideal color, but it's cleeeean.

I think thats still too much money for the car, and that is very high mileage. Dont go crazy over it looking clean; those pictures dont show crap. For all we know, its got fouled plugs, clogged injectors, seized bearings, buttery brakes, and an effective compression ratio of 0.8:1... Somehow...

The VR6 is a good platform for power. One of the best small engines that VW released imo; but over 5k is really pushing it. You can do better. Thats not really a "deal" of a price, thats just a regular joe price.

And why would you get a VR6? I would imagine a different car could suit your needs for cheaper and better.

Well after a lot of though, and research, I really want a hatchback. I need the space. And I really like the look of the MkIV GTI's. From what i understand, the 1.8T can be tuned to have more power than the VR6, but that's not my thing... I want low end torque, not something that doesn't shine until 4k RPM....

The 1.8T can be tuned for more power than the VR6? That doesnt even make logical sense. Maybe in stock form with stock equipment, yes, but if the VR6 had a turbo attached (very common), the 1.8T wouldnt stand a chance in hell, and if money were no object in tuning, the VR6 would win in power; ZERO doubts.

And there are other hatchbacks apart from the Golf.

VR6's are extremely expensive for repair and maintenance.

The car is edging towards 120K on the odo it's probably going to need a new timing chain and tensioner. Also it may need new gaskets for the oil pan. exhaust, and the head at 130K miles.

I meant it's easier to make more pwoer out of the 1.8T than the VR6. A simple tune, increase PSI a couple lbs, and you're making more power than the 2.8, considering it was re-tuned for power as well.

Timing chain is a given. Gaskets? Lol those can all be done in an afternoon. There are a couple European car specialists in town.

The timing chain, tensioners, and gaskets are just the annual maintenance parts at 120k.

Also be sure that you get the front and rear suspension checked for worn bushing and shocks. As front suspension has the tendency to wear out wheel bearings and the like.

Suspension? Never thought about checking that... but that makes sense. espeically the rubber parts I'd assume. Thanks. smile Well does $6k sound fair or too much? KBB suggestion $6700 from a dealer, $5050 from private sale. Sadly all the VR6s I find go for ~$6k

All VW's from that time will have worn wheel bearings, shocks, bushing, and sometimes worn sway bar end links. All the commonality of costing an arm and two legs to purchase.

I would say 6k is too much for a high milage car especially for an VW of that era. $4900 would be the upper end of any VW near 120K miles.
Dont do it.

Shirtless Lunatic

So i checked out that add and heres my take,
I would say dont get it and heres why:
Everyone has a Gti or golf of some sort and having a vr6 (which is awsome btw) doesnt make it unique. Besides THAT particular one is rather... ugly i guess. It doesnt look right, and one more thing to consider:
Volkswagen in general, after awhile and depending on how long you have this car and how you treat it, arent the most reliabpe cars. I said it. Maybe ive just had bad experiences with them but, i dunno.

Other than that does it have any modifications or perfomance inhancements? Like turbo, intake, brakes etc?

But i gotta say, seeing chicks in fast cars, :3 all i gotta say xD

If i were you though, Id check out some Subaru legacy gt's, all wheel drive, usually come with 300horsepower, not usually ownded by people who beat on them (even though most subaru owners are notorious for beating on their car like it owes them money legacy owners are usually nice to them) and subaru is quite reliable.
just my take. (:
