Too short to reach most cars' pedals...

So I just found the most gorgeous 23 year old Ford Escort very close to where I live, in almost perfect condition and with a very reasonable price, unfortunately, I can't reach the pedals. I've tried quite a few cars out today to see what I can drive, and discovered this is a problem with most of them, I can reach to press the clutch right the way down with the end of my toe... I noticed mole man on the Simpsons has pieces of wood glued to his pedals so he can reach them, is there a sensible/legal/known method of doing something like this, obviously not with wooden blocks, or moving the pedals so us unfortunates under 5' can reach them?

Yes. Despite having adjusted every car that I've tried to be as close as possible, I still can't reach them.

Idk! You may want to reconsider the wood idea. Just the other day me and a guy friend used wood blocks to raise my cars suspension. Just wedged a few of those in each spring and my car is like a full 1in higher and it's been 3 days and no issues! That wood s**t is miraculous!

I feel your pain. I drive a Chevy Cobalt, and I still have to sit so close to my steering wheel (which is not adjustable) that I can't put down my visor without mauling my face.
Look into shops that can make extensions for your pedals. If you can't afford, try thickening up your pedals with adhesive rubber or something.

After purchasing the car you can take it to a body shop or a repair garage and have them heat up and bend the metal arms for the clutch and other pedals. Otherwise I'm sure a machine shop or a metal shop and weld together extensions for you, as well as weld them into the vehicle.


I'm not entirely sure of the safety implications or legality of this though. I'm doing it to even and space out the pedals in my car, I have size 13 feet which makes heel-toe-shifting hard in a tiny civic.

^ This. I can't speak for Minis personally, but I've driven the Chevrolet Spark as a rental before.

I'm just under 5'4" and I had to bend my knees awkwardly just because the pedals were so much closer in comparison to other cars - even with the seat moved back.

I know that this can be inconvenient and expensive, but have you ever thought of hand controls? In that case you can control the brake and the gas pedals with levers right near the steering wheel instead of having to attempt to reach them on the floor.

My brother also told me that you can add extensions to your petals. I'm not EXACTLY sure how it's done, but he described it as a rod that comes up from your regular pedal with another pedal attached to it, closer to where you sit, obviously.

Nah, it doesn't put as nearly as much weight on the pedals as wooden blocks. You have basically the same amount of pressure as regular pedals except that the pedals are closer to you.
