Welcome to Gaia! ::

Okay so my car is in my mom's name. We're going to get the title in my name now. However I'm moving to Texas today...and we're from missouri. She gave me all what I need to do it and signed stuff but I needed the car inspection papers (which I lost while packing!)

So I was wondering could I still get in my name when I move to Texas?
Will there be anything extra that I'll need?

I would really like to get some advice on this. I don't have enough money or time to do the inspection today and I can't put off the move.
I'd go to the nearest DMV, and ask. Not very helpful, I know, but they usually know their rules in there.

I'm going to. I was just hoping someone could give me an answer before I go. sweatdrop

Try Yahoo Answers. But If you're getting the title transferred to another state then they'll need to inspect it. You could always just get it transferred in Missouri and registered there until you have the money to transfer it to a Texas title if that's an option. But other than that I'd recommend calling the Texan DMV and asking. I've been through hell and back with dealing with titles lol.. I know it can be a pain especially when you're trying to get something done out of state

Have your mom "sell" you the car for zero dollars. They will usually give you a grace period to have your car inspected.

That, except it can't be zero in a lot of places, that's illegal
it'd need to be like $10 or something so tax can be calculated on transfer of ownership, and just hope they go off that rather than KBB

I just said that because that's what I did, but if you don't feel comfortable doing that then just put down $1. That's what corporations do when they can't just give something away.
So, did you misplace the title outright? When I got my car transfered to my name my mom just signed the title, then I signed it (the specific places should be well marked) and I handed it in at the DMV when I went to register. That was it. Most states give you 30-90 days to register once you move (I've moved to three different states since getting my car) so I would just have your mom order a new copy of the title if you can't find it.

Yeah there's a minimum which they have to charge taxes on, but this works only if the car is old enough. It depends on the province or state. Here in Quebec, most cars older than 12 years old can be transferred using a value of 50$ for the car unless it's a Ferrari or some sort of prestige cars. Other than that, for recent cars, they run the "blue book" and declared value must be within an acceptable range of what the car is worth.

But in Quebec, as far as I know, transferring a car in the same family doesn't require to declare a value at all since it's within family. You should check the rules for this with your state services, DMV or such authorities prior to transfer the car, just to make sure.

Well, the poster said that she lost the title. Usually, the DMV will be able to issue a new identification paper if the person that owns the vehicle ask for it in person at their bureau. That's how it works in my province. Again, you should ask your state's official but if they can't do this, they suck, go live in another state! LOL
@ Isuna: What I meant was, was it "lost" (as in in a box, but no one's sure which one) so that they might find it once they unpack, or lost as in completely gone, somewhere in their previous home. Her mother should be able to get a new copy either way, either in person at the DMV or she may be able to call/mail in to request one.
