Welcome to Gaia! ::

So being poor as s**t and not being able to afford a half decent set of wheels for my car I have taken it upon myself to paint them!

So what are your peoples opinions? Im trying to do a black with silver/chrome lip. I used my spare as a test platform. Used the wrong primer so the chrome just showed up silver.

Discuss:

Rims. What do you have, what do you like, what do you wish you could have.

Being poor.

Whatever the hell you want to talk about.

First off, chroming is a process not a paint

Second you need to clean up the rust in those wheel holes unless you want the paint to start flaking from there out

Third, I can see crazy overspray on the tire, dismount it next time girl!

Also, I have Gunmetal Enkei Raijin wheels on my car
Sit nice, I like 'em

Yes I know its a process but PAINT.

Did you not read where I said I used a spare as a test platform. Overspray and s**t was the least of my worries on a space saver. I was just using it to see how the paint turned out.

I read it
Not an excuse for sloppiness!

Also, never heard of a chrome paint, who makes it?
If you primed it properly, would it actually come out looking chrome?

Fair enough :p

It was just a random can of Duplicolor that I got out of advance autoparts.

It wouldn't really come out looking chrome. With the correct base it comes out looking kind of like a dull/clouded chrome. Not really that mirror finish like you would imagine. More of a really reflective silver.

There is paint you can get that will give you that nice mirror finish but shits expensive and last time I checked doesn't come in a can.

Little bit of patience m'love!
just deflate the tire, push back the sidewall, do some progressive wet-sanding, bit of scotch brite and some metal polish

If the paint goes to s**t ill try that.

But really im doing this by taking a single wheel off, replacing it with the spare, painting the wheel, then after it dries putting it back on and repeating until all 4 are done.

Its all trial and error! biggrin

Not going to just take a weekend?

What kind of prep work are you doing before you paint it?

Taking like 3 or 4 days to do it.

Washing the wheels down with soap and water, dry, wax and grease remover, let dry, 320 grit sand paper the s**t out of the wheel, wax and grease remover again, matt black, then gloss, then chrome, then maybe some more gloss.

Should use a flat rather than matte for adhesion purposes
matte paint still has a mild sheen to it

Are you wet sanding, or just going to town on it?

Just going all out.
I painted my last truck rims black,i used rustoleum spray paint it stayed on for 2 years til it started flaking off a little bit,I clean the rims up with gas and let it dry before i painted it
Second wheel came out significantly better than the last biggrin

I really suck at applying gloss though emotion_facepalm
