Welcome to Gaia! ::

I've heard that Harleys are pretty decent bikes. I love the looks of a Sportster 48 - there's no doubt in mind that I want a bike like that. But every now and again, I'm hearing that Harleys aren't worth the money anymore and that I should buy a Honda - so I looked at the Honda Shadow Phantom. They're both similar, but I know very little about motorcycles.

Thoughts?
I love Harley's but honda's or really good bikes the shadow being one I would like to have. For me it's the still of the Harley's I like more but from what I know there both good bike if you can get them for the right price.
The only thing that I know about these 2 bikes is that the Honda is a few thousand dollars cheaper. Which is why I'm leaning towards the Honda, but I'm assuming there's no major difference between the two bikes that makes one more superior than the other?
If I could, I'd like to throw another option into the mix
The Vulcan is actually one of my favorite bikes

That really depends on the rider
for me, it was really nice, but I'm also not really a very petite guy (6'1, 190lbs)

I know they have a fair range of the Vulcan models though, starter bikes to the 2000cc version
One I rode i believe was a 1700

Now I'm used to overpowered everything, cause I'm wired that way, but what the Vulcan has on tap was retarded to me. Yet at the same time, the throttle was so smooth, it really seemed like it was only there if you wanted it, but if you didn't, it's as take as can be.

The ride was crazy smooth, but didn't feel like you were sailing, steering however, cruisers and touring bikes aren't my thing, so I'm not sure if this was normal or not, but steering really seemed heavy, leaning and so on really seemed like a chore. on a freeway, I'm sure the more mild turns are no problem, but in a suburban are, where turns are a bit more exaggerated, turning was really heavy, almost tiring even.

That type of thing is really not for me, but I'd imagine if you're the Harley type, bike would fit well
As for me, I'll keep my eyes on an Agusta

In my opinion, if the Harley is smaller then a softtail it's generally not worth it. 883 and 1200's prices drop real quick once they're used.

Starting out, it's best to get something used and cheap, whether that's a used Harley or honda is your personal preference. I personally love Harley's, but don't go buy something new and nice when you're just going to be dropping it and messing it up. If I were you I'd look at Hondas bikes and start out on those, then once you get better at riding after a few years and less likely to drop a bike due to your own faults, an upgrade can be in order

I have been riding since 1999 and my first love is the 98 Honda Shadow 1100. In my opinion Honda is the way to ride. Most of them are Water cooled and all the cruisers are shaft drive. No messy and noisy chain to dicker with.

I've discovered a new brand! Any opinion on Triumph?

Specifically, this one.
If you're set on a cruiser type of motorcycle, I'd suggest a Hondo Rebel. 3nodding They give you a little more leeway when it comes to speed.
I personally like Yamaha. Although I personally won't buy a Harley. My issues are that they are expensive and the only thing you actually get is a low depreciation value. I think they are heavy and loud. You can get a cheaper bike that is easier to ride around in with a Yamaha or a Honda. I can't talk to my girlfriend on a Harley. But on almost any other bike I can. They also vibrate like mad. My a** hurts every time I get off of it. If that is the style that you like then that is fine. Some people like the big, loud, beasts of machines that are Harleys. But they are not my style I guess. Make sure you look into everything.

See, that is fine. Just know that Harleys are like that. Nothing wrong with it. I just don't like that.

Harleys are money pits, get a Honda Shadow or a Virago.
