Edele packed her things slowly after the last bell rang. She always hated battling with the others to get through the door. So, she took her time, gingerly placing her notebooks and pencil and her reading book all in their proper places and finally flipping her messenger bag closed and putting it over her shoulder. Only once it was squarely placed in the perfect position, did Edele start to walk out of the classroom and down the halls to her locker so that she could retrieve the spare notebook she wanted to take home.
However, she rounded the corner and saw someone she really was hoping she'd never lay eyes on again. Okay, that was silly. It was a small town and a small school and Edele did enjoy the band shows, so it was completely impossible that she'd never see him again. But... she couldn't handle it if he tried to talk to her. So, she walked back the other way, avoiding the band guy she'd formerly called a friend.
The main hallway still buzzed with activity. People trying to shove their stuff into their bags or whatever before going off to have their Friday afternoon fun. Edele kept her eyes down a bit as she walked. She'd never been comfortable with so many people around. As she neared the front doors, Edele saw someone else she'd rather not have seen at that moment.
There was Alex, sitting at a computer, probably fixing it. Her boyfriend and best friend. No... ex-boyfriend... Somehow, Edele didn't think she'd ever get used to saying that. She and Alex had known each other for what felt like forever. In reality it was 5th grade. But, that was the beginning of Edele's new life, and it honestly was probably the greatest thing that had happened to her, becoming friends with Alex. They had so many good times. All those years. Edele didn't have many friends, and she felt kind of lost without Alex around. But she couldn't dwell on that. So, blinking a few times to keep the small tears that always formed when she thought about all that had happened from falling down, Edele kept walking out the front doors of the school and headed off to the bookstore where she knew Myka would be.
Myka, Edele's bestie. She'd know just what to do to cheer up. Plus, there was that book Edele was currently working on devouring. It was a book about King Arthur and Camelot. Those were probably Edele's favorite stories, there were few other stories that Edele would keep coming back to like she did the Arthurian legends. Walking into Dusty Books, Edele gave a wave to the woman who ran the store and headed straight upstairs.
She opened the door and plopped herself down onto a couch, setting her back beside her and exhaling a deep sigh. Then, Edele turned her gaze over to Myka. Knowing that the writer would want to know what was up, Edele explained, "I saw he who shall not be named and Alex today." Then, Edele grabbed her bag and rifled through it searching for a certain book. There had to be half a dozen books in this bag. "Why does life have to suck so bad?" Edele nearly whined when she finally found the book she'd been looking for. Last time she was up here she'd accidentally taken the book home with her. Not that it was missed terribly. Edele put the book back on it's shelf then let her fingers graze along the spines of the others on the shelf. She missed Alex. A lot.
