Elli
Elli was the first to be hugged by Alizee and she was so happy to see the girl. Though it was short, it was still sweet. Elli watched as she moved from person to person. Everyone seemed to be so legitimately happy to be there, all except Paul. He seemed tense, a bit uncomfortable. Maybe it was too much to hope for, for everyone to want to be together. She’d be lying if it didn’t sting just a bit. She had always known that his friends didn’t like her, or at least enjoyed making fun of her and her own group of friends. But she had always had some sort of hope that Paul was different, that he didn’t par take in the mocking and the physical altercations. Her own run ins with the jock crowd had been minimal, almost nonexistent as of recently.
Elli’s freshman year had been the worse. Just before summer break when lockers had been completely emptied out, Elli had been running late as was one of Paul’s friends. She had no idea what she had done to set him off so badly, but it was the first time she had ever wished to be taller. While she was no midget, she was just short enough and slim enough to fit into her school locker. She could hear him laughing as he walked away. She didn’t know how long it had been but eventually someone had come to help her, she told him the combination through the locker and soon she was free. She couldn’t help but cry and of course it was Paul who had to be the one to see her cry. She had never told him who had put her into the locker but after that the physical bullying had stop, at least towards her. She sometimes liked to think Paul had something to do with that, that maybe just maybe he still cared the same way.
And then she heard him say “
Uh.. I’m in room 120.”
She would have been excited expect he seemed so the opposite of it. Like he would rather anyone but her. Her thoughts were only confirmed when the elevator came and he entered it, moving away from the group. She saw Gabe and he seemed to need some alone time, some just couldn’t handle crowds and one was starting to form and besides Evie was doing her best to look out for him, Elli could tell. She was almost tempted to follow Gabe’s suit and try to take the stairs but she was never one to be a coward and if she and Paul were going to be rooming together for this vacation, then she’d have to figure out how to say more than two syllables to him. Why not start now.
Grabbing her luggage, Elli entered the elevator as well, making sure to give him the space he seemed to want.
“We should all get together for dinner later, once everyone has settled in that is,” she said to the group as she pushed the button for their floor. She hadn’t expected everyone to be so entranced in conversation, soon the doors began to close and Paul and Elli were headed up. Elli stood in silence, unsure of what to say or do. She could feel herself beginning to mess with her hair, a habit for when she was nervous. Elli had never been so full of nerves in years.
