<i>As you walk on the west side of Barton, you will find a skyscraper that is almost right next to the finest jewellery store there is. Spread over the seven stories are thirty-five three-room apartments, lived in by students, singles, young couples and people with low paid jobs. If you walk up to the door you will see that all the doorbells have name tags on them. The doorbell marked with the number 701 has a very fresh tag next to it, with</i> ‘Nedyfay Darkchild’ <i>written on it in black ballpoint and graceful handwriting. This Nedyfay Darkchild has obviously not lived here all that long.
Now, if you happen to be a complete stranger – please, do continue your journey. Nedyfay Darkchild does not like strangers much, and only a few selected people know her address. But if you happen to be one of those selected people, feel free to press the doorbell to see if she happens to be home - if not, slip a note in her mailbox and she will know when she gets home.
If she is home, you will soon hear her voice over the intercom, asking for your name. As soon as you tell her you will hear a buzzing from the door. As you walk up the stairs (because the elevator is permanently out of order) you will that there is a wide variety of smells coming from the different apartments. When you have walked up fourteen stairs you will finally reach Nedyfay’s floor. Her little flat is at the far end of the corridor, and next to her door she has hammered in a nail and from it hangs a simple sign stating that</i> ‘Here lives Nedyfay Darkchild’ <i>. Her doormat gives you the friendly greeting of</i> ‘Hell no, not you again!’ <i>and the door has a cat door in it. After some shooing the door is finally opened and there stands the tiny little kittysune. Out from behind her peek two kittybombs, but as soon as you come in the little animals zoom off somewhere.

The colours of the little flat are mainly black and white; all the bigger surfaces are a shade of white, and the small details are black. When you have walked past the wall that makes a small make-do entrance, you see that the floor of <b>the combined living room/kitchen</b> is black a black carpet with slashes of white. In the kitchen area the carpet is replaced by off-white linoleum because it is easier to keep clean. The walls are made of brick that has been painted white, and there is nothing hanging from them. In fact, the free space is dominated by windows. Every window has a black blind pulled halfway down. One the white, two-person couch there is a heap of books and a thick, black blanket of wool with a Siamese cat on it. The table on front of the couch also supports books as well as three pictures in delicate, silver frame. The bigger one is of a girl with purple hair and a twinkle in her eye – Winter Rose Darkchild, Nedyfay’s daughter:
The second one is of a man with soft brown hair falling into his clear blue eyes. He is laughing and probably unaware of the fact that he is being photographed. It is Bryon, the man who has won Nedyfay’s heart over. And the third is of a little gypsy girl – Musset, Nedyfay’s unofficially adopted ten year old daughter:

On the opposite side of the table are two black bean bags. At the left wall are two book shelves filled up with books of all kinds; thriller, romance, science fiction, western, comedy. Nedyfay also seems to be fond of the old classics, and has three shelves devoted to them. Not far from the bookshelves is the refrigerator, the dishwasher with a microwave on it, a cupboard where you can find pans and such, a sink, and an oven with grill. Next to the oven is a big, soft chair in the same style and colour as the couch. Next to it stand four small, black, plastic dishes, two of them filled with water and two of them empty, and one litter box filled with cat sand.
On the right wall is the door leading to the bedroom. On the right side is Nedyfay’s desk, with a computer, a black holder for files and, a telephone. On the left are more bookshelves, but the top three are filled with framed pictures of various people, and the bottom three are filled with boxes of all sorts. All the boxes have a little tag on them saying what they contain.
<b>The bathroom</b> is completely white. In one corner is a big, two-person bubble bath – a little luxury Nedyfay could not resist. In the opposite corner there is a shower with a heated towel just on the outside. Next to the shower stands the laundry basket (the washing machines are in the basement of the complex), and on the other side of the door is a chest of three drawers. Here you can find clean towels, fresh soap, etc. The sink is right next to is and the toilet it next to the bubble bath.
<b>The bedroom</b> is off-limits to most guests. It is Nedyfay’s own little domain – a haven inside a haven. She has a queen sized, cast-iron bed with three soft pillows and a big quilt – black or white, depending on which of the sets are in the laundry. On the right side of the bed there is a chest of drawers where she keeps her clothes, and on the right side is a small bedside table. Both pieces of furniture are supporting a lamp. Also here the blind is pulled halfway down over the window. A white wardrobe made of wood holds clothing not appropriate for the season, and a white bookshelf holds even more reading material – but this time it is more magazines and photo albums than actual books. The walls are white and the thick rug on the floor is likewise.</i>
