Project "Impact" is a state run organization that is a combination of volunteer work and community service hours. Project "Impact" is run throughout many different states, a few in other countries around the world. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to caring and providing for the temporarily or permanently disabled. The first official site were "Impact" was brought to life was Huntington Beach, California. The facility in Huntington was built only miles from the beach so the disabled could be able to see or smell the freshness in the air. The founders decided it would be a nice, positive atmosphere for the patients. The "Impact" facility is not a hospital. It is more of a half-way home. It is a place for the people with a disability to stay and to heal. For others, ones with more permanent circumstances, it is a home of peers that will understand them, a place they can live and be themselves without fear of anyone judging them for their disability. For some the place is sort of a safe haven from the outside world that can be harsh and destructive. Even old patients who have longed moved on, visit and chat with former friends or doctors. Recently "Impact" has partnered up with a youth correction facility called "Development," giving second chances to troubled kids, just as "Impact" has done for so many disabled, youth or adult. The kids of "Development," are there to do their community service hours that were ordered by a federal judge. There are also kids on probation from juvenile detention sent by "Development," because it's easier to keep watch on them and to help them. They want the kids to pay for their crimes, but also learn to be caring and respectful to other people; they are trying to teach them that they don't have it too bad. During the kids probation or community service hours they are bunked in the "Impact" facility along with the patients and must stay until the duration of their sentence is up. The patients of "Impact" have all different kinds of disabilities, whether it is blindness or a broken collarbone. Some will heal and some won't. "Impact" allows for two student interns and any volunteers that are willing to make an effort. "Impact" is a place to connect and to recover, a place for bonding and for healing, a place of learning and of training, a place that cares. Our story takes place in the present day 2011-12 ish time frame. It is summer in Huntington Beach and the sun is up everyday and the beach camp fires at night are the biggest hang out spots this time of year. Project "Impact" allows for a select few of the Volunteers to bunk in the facility for the summer, like a summer camp. The interns are atomatically accepted along with four other volunteers. The parolees must stay because it is part of their sentence and the patients are there until they are fully recovered or ready to be realeased. For a recovery facility, being ten minutes away from the beach isn't too bad, though with a bunch of teens staying under one roof, it may become more like a reality show.

This kid doesn't use his disability as an excuse to be a couch potato. He loves to get outside and hang with everyone else. If it weren't for the seeing eye dog, you would never know he was blind. Blind from birth, He hasn't known anything else. As a child he was frustrated with the fact that other children would describe such wonderful things that he couldn't see, but as he grew he learned to accept that he wasn't going to see it and he was ok with that. He began to learn how to see through his other senses. Smell, Touch, and sometimes Taste, though his teachers would complain of him licking things around the classroom. Once he accepted his fate, he moved on with his life. He played outside all the time, played sports with the other kids and read books, in brail of course. He loved life and still does. He doesn't see his blindness as a problem because he has still always been able to do the things that he loves. He liveshis life to the fullest and doesn't mind what others may think. He likes to joke around with those who are nervous around him for his disability. He has been coming to "Impact" since he was a child and he spends every summer here with his friends and doctors. He considers them his family.

She was eight when everything went completely quiet. Though she knew it was coming, it was still quite a shock. She went to sleep being able to hear noises and loud voices and woke up the next morning unable to hear anything. At first she didn't react, at first she didn't feel anything at all. Eventually that lead to confusion and then to anger. For a few years she lashed out and did a few things she wasn't proud of, but nothing law breaking or anything. Eventually anger turned to sadness and then depression. She hated that she couldn't hear anymore and that the sounds she had loved were only memories and they were starting to fade. She came to "Impact" when she had reached an all time low and attempted to end her own life. "Impact" taught her how to deal with the stress of the outside world and how to accept er disability as part of her. She has come a long way and is much stronger than before, but sometimes her emotions get the better of her and she will become upset about her deafness, though she rarely breaks down in fron of anyone else. She can read lips extremely well and can speak quite nicely, making it hard to tell that she is deaf at first. She is also a fluent sign language-er. This is only her third summer at "Impact" but she is very comfortable with everyone there and fits in quite well.

She's a risk taker. Whether it was sports or pass times, she was always willing to take the risk. She has broken almost all the major bones in her body. With all the injuries you'd have thought she would have been here a long time ago, but she had been lucky up to this point. All her previous broken bones had healed successfully without any problem. Once healed she would continue with her risks, not really learning from her mistakes. One night she was partying with a few of her friends playing truth or dare. The party was at a lake near her home, a bridge running over it to allow cars to pass over the small body of water. A friend dared her to dive into the lake and being the risk taker that she was, she obliged. What she didn't realize in a lapse of judgment and slight intoxication was that the lake was very shallow. When she dove she broke another part of her body, but this time it was her spine. She woke up a few days later with zero movement in her legs and no possible chance of regaining it, or so they said. Her parents took her to "Impact" who has the most certified physical therapists in the world and they told them they would be willing to help but it wouldn't be easy and the motion of her legs would never be the same, but it would be better. This is her first summer at "Impact" and she is determined to get back her legs. She believes she will be getting out soon and that everything will be back to normal so she doesn't really talk to anyone in the program.

This poor boy has a bad reputation throughout Brooklyn, New York. He was only a young kid when he witnessed a murder. Instead of calling the police, he ran, never saying a word since that night. When his finger prints were found at the crime scene the police called him in for questioning. He wouldn't say a word, too scared to say anything. With the evidence placing him at the crime scene and no other leads the police were forced to arrest him. He was placed under house arrest until he was a little bit older and then he was sentenced to twenty to life starting with juvinile detnetion until he was old enough to be transferred to a jail cell. When he was about two years away from graduating to big boy prison, a witness came forward that had been too scared before and the testimony was able to free the innocent boy. After he was realsed his family moved him to Huntington because he wasn't doing well with all the accusations at school. When they finally moved in, he was found with pot and was forced to take community service hours to make up for it. He believes he only got community service because the police felt embarrased about his previous years of jevenile hall that he had never needed. He was placed in Project "Impact" for his first summer in hopes that he would be able to get a fresh start and maybe speak to someone since he hasn't spoken in over five years.

This young man started in crime at a young age. He didn't have the best family life, his dad leaving when he was a young boy. He started with small crimes and worked his way up to drug dealing. Finally after a while the judge finally said enough was enough and sent him to juvinile detention for a few years. When he was older he was released and is on probation once more. He is sentenced to community service and since nothing else has worked, they sent him to "Impact." This is his first summer here and he's not happy about it. He doesn't like hanging out with a bunch of people that aren't "normal" as he would put it. Maybe this program will knock him back into reality; or not. He is a very bright kid, but he uses his intellegence in all the wrong ways. He can be very selfish, but only because he's trying to hide from his true feelings. He really doesn't like the way he treats people, but when his temper flairs, he can't seem to help himself.

Thought she had the perfect five finger discount, but she got too cocky and was snatched quickly. She was almost sent to juvenile detention, but at the last minute the jewelry store dropped the charges, maybe due to pleas from the parents, no one ever knew, but instead she was sentenced to community service during the summer and her assignment was "Impact". She doesn't mind the charges, she likes trying new things, and she had volunteered at places like "Impact" before, so it wasn't new. She's actually excited to be able to spend time with some people and be so close to the beach, but she's not so excited about having a record. Looks like there's no more thieving for her, or is there?

Her little sister was the one who pushed her to apply for the "Impact" internship in the first place. A few weeks after she was accepted into the internship, she was driving home with her sister in the passenger seat. A drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into the passenger side of the car, her sister dying on impact. She is still traumatized and she hasn't gotten behind to wheel of a car since. It's been a few months and she decided to continue with the internship because her sister would have wanted her to. She knows it wasn't her fault, but she can't help and wonder sometimes if she could have done anything to prevent her sisters death. Its been hard for her to get out of bed and she suffers from moderate depression that she has medication for and therapy twice a week. It's hard going to a place like "Impact" because her sister was deaf and the patients remind her of what she lost, but she puts up a strong front for her sister.

He became a doctor assistant intern after he spent three summers volunteering there. He fell in love with the people and the place. He gets along fairly well with all the patients, except for the new girl of course. He is using the internship for some experience and for college applications. He wants to become a doctor when he is all grown up and working along side some of the most well trained doctors internationally will definitely stand out to future schools. "Impact" has been a life changing experience for him. No one in his family has ever gone to college so it means a lot to him to do well at his internship so he can make his parents proud. He is respected by the "Impact" staff and given good advice, but he sometimes wishes he could have a bit more responsibility. If he feels he can do a job well, he'll do it without permission, which can be extremely problematic for the "Impact" employees and volunteers.

She is extremely passionate about the "Impact" program and it takes a lot to break her focus. She has big dreams of one day making her own center for children with disabilities. She gets along with most people and can be very stubborn. She doesn't take no for an answer. She puts everyone's needs before her own, but it doesn't bother her. She has a very big heart and is very accepting. She is probably the easiest one to talk to out of the volunteers and employees.

He tends to think he is better than most because he holds knowledge like no other, but it makes him seem like more of an a** than an intellectual. He can't control what comes out of his mouth. He doesn't try to be a jerk, but he doesn't think the way most do and his social skills are a pit off. He answers questions logically, not emotionally, so its hard for him to tell patients they'll be alright and reassure them, when the diagnostics prove otherwise and it makes him look inconsiderate and pretentious. It also may be the fact that he's loaded and has everything he's ever wanted handed to him.

Being that it is a mild case, she can talk to people without being too scared, but she does have to push herself. The problem is, is that she doesn't want to push herself. She's afraid if she finally tries to open up that she will just be shot down and rejected. She can't stand the thought of it, so social interactions for her are slim, though being at "Impact" has help her a little and she can keep idle chit chat with some of the patients, which is an improvement.

He signed up for "Impact" because he didn't want to spend his life just being the surfer boy that has no real brains, or the athlete that never did anything useful. He wants to help make a difference, though "Impact" may not have been the place to start. He likes the environment and the people, but when he's around the patients he feels awkward and unsure of what to say. He's never been around people with disabilities and he feels like he's going to say something offending, so he tends to avoid them, even though as a volunteer it's his job to interact with them. Quite a sticky situation he's gotten himself in.
