- ➸ tab Paragraph 1 text
➸ tab The baby wasn't awake yet.
Gray-green eyes popped open wide. Rolling over onto his side, the middle-aged man groaned as he blindly reached across his nightstand for his brown-framed glasses, inadvertently knocking them from the surface where they fell to the carpeted floor with a soft thud... Just as they did every morning. The monitor on the same nightstand remained unscathed, revealing only the comforting sounds of a sleeping baby. He blew out a sigh of relief, as he fumbled around on the floor looking for his glasses.
Attractive.
➸ tab He raked a hand back through his rather unruly mop of curly red-brown hair as he made his way down the hallway, glasses securely placed on the bridge of his nose, appropriate dad uniform of a sweater and khakis and sneakers on his body. He could hear the noise coming from the kitchen, hearing his kids all conversing with each other, punctuated with the shrill voice of a toddler clearly too excited about pancakes. It made him smile to himself a bit as he walked. It was nice to have a full house. He peeked in the door to the baby's room, not able to believe his luck that he was still asleep. Again making his way to the kitchen, he heard a soft stirring from his daughter, Alice's, room... And promptly remembered that there was a boy in there. The hair on the back of his neck prickled a bit at the thought... After all, what choices could he possibly have made to have both a seven month old baby AND a college-aged daughter sleeping with her boyfriend under the same roof? What was he doing?
No wonder his wife left. Clearly, she had done nothing but be pregnant for twenty years.
➸ tab He finally made his way down the stairs to the kitchen, where everyone was chowing down. The perfume of the pancakes filled the air with a sticky warmth that smacked of comfort and peace. He had never thought he would be such a sap, but seeing his family all together was almost thrilling. His oldest son and daughter were following in his footsteps to some degree, both being enrolled in college, his middle son had just begun. Milo was a Biology professor at the local university, which is largely what allowed him to afford sending so many of his kids away. Those tuition exchange programs were a godsend. He looked over to his second oldest son, eating what could only be described as... something... He wrinkled his nose a bit... Mason was an enigma to him. Sure, when he was young, he remembered that pot was pretty awesome... but he still was able to do other things... His understanding of this child of his was limited at best. At worst? It was like they were in separate solar systems.
Finally feeling awake enough to speak, he cheerily greeted everyone. "Morning, guys... Man, haven't had to squeeze past this many people in here in a long time." He made his way past the stove, squeezing Alice's shoulder and kissing her on the cheek quickly. "Smells awesome, girl. Thanks."
Keeping his eyes on Jensen's pancake, his scratched his beard lightly and addressed the crowd (and it WAS a crowd) "So. What's the game plan for today? Surely you guys have something miraculous planned for such a nice day."
This was the life of a single dad. Business was good.
