Why is America so obsessed with reality TV? Perhaps the answer is because they don’t have a very tight grip on their own reality and watching someone else fail makes them feel somewhat whole. Isn’t it funny though? After all, reality TV isn’t one hundred percent truthful. Sure what someone says or does might have really happened but it’s all edited to make it look like it occurred in a completely different way from how it actually went down. That’s why Jason tends to avoid it like it’s the plague. It’s all so fake and tedious – not that sitcoms are much different. Hell, even documentaries are sometimes total bullshit but, in Jason’s eyes, they have more raw emotion than “reality” shows ever could. Yet, here he is, saying goodbye to Janelle and his father and then heading off to star on MTV’s latest show. Why did he ever let Tim talk him into this?
“Promise you’ll call us when you land?” Jason’s father asked for what had to be the millionth time. Jason was used to it though and, frankly, he loved it because he knew it meant his father cared and that’s more than he can say for his mother. “I promise I’ll call so much you’ll have to start telling me to go mingle,” he responded with a laugh. Janelle leaned forward in her seat and ruffled his hair. “You better not be a loner,” she teased. Still laughing, he turned in his seat to face his twin sister. “Excuse me?” he asked, pretending to be hurt, “When have I ever been a loner?” Janelle gave him a look, as if to say that he’d always be one. Rolling his eyes, Jason faced forward.
Once they reached the airport, Jason climbed out of the passenger’s seat and walked over to the driver’s side where his father was waiting. “Don’t do anything you’ll regret,” the old man told him. Jason nodded as he pulled his father into a warm embrace. Janelle walked up beside them and crossed her arms against her chest. “You know I’m going to want details right? Seriously, you better give me all the gossip.” Jason shrugged and laughed. “I doubt I’ll be allowed to tell you much but I’ll do my best okay?” he assured her, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close. She ruffled his hair just before he released her. “Bring me back something?” she asked innocently and he nodded. Waving goodbye to the two, he took his suitcase and headed for the doors.
Now on the plane, Jason quickly found his seat next to a redheaded girl who appeared to be around eleven or twelve and all alone. He glanced around, trying to see if maybe her parents were seated somewhere else, but no one really fit the bill. “Are you flying by yourself?” he asked softly, placing his carry-on in the compartment above them. The young girl looked up at him and nodded her head shyly. In truth, Jason had been on an airplane a total of three times and it’s never exactly been delightful. He would much rather drive to California but the MTV crew insisted on flying. “Have you ever played ‘Would You Rather’?” he questioned, taking his seat next to her. She shook her head and pressed her stuffed unicorn against her chest. “Well the object of the game is basically to ask each other if you’d rather do one thing over another and you want to make the choices really disgusting,” he told her with friendly smile. She giggled and shifted her small body towards him. “I’ll go first,” he said, then paused to think up a question, “Okay, would you rather eat worms for the rest of your life or swim in a pool filled with gummy bears?” She giggled again and exclaimed, “Eww, I hate worms!” Jason laughed with her and nodded in agreement. “So pool filled with gummy bears then?” Still laughing, she nodded.
A few hours later, the little girl – whose name turned out to be Rosie – was shaking Jason’s shoulder and telling him that they had arrived. He helped her find her Aunt before heading to baggage claim where a man was waiting with a sign that had his name on it. Honestly, he wasn’t expecting that. Yeah, he had no idea what house he would be staying at but he never really thought about how he’d get there so it’s a good thing MTV figured all that out for him. Rubbing the back of his neck, he walked up to the male with a nervous smile on his face. “Uh, I think you’re looking for me.” The man lead the way to a white stretch limo that made Jason’s eyes bulge. Where they really taking that? Jason made his way inside and quickly pulled his GoPro out from his backpack. “Is alright if I film some?” The chauffer nodded, so Jason turned the camera on and held it out in front of himself.
“Hey guys, I just got off the plane and I’m about to call you but I wanted to get some footage first. I bet you’re gawking now because I’m sitting in a freaking limo. Yeah, you heard me right. MTV really outdid themselves.”
He flashed a cheesy grin before flipping the camera so that it faced the window. He filmed the city some as they drove towards the house then put the camera away. He pulled out his cellphone then and dialed his father’s number before the chauffeur told him that he’d have to take his phone away before he gets in the house. Jason hadn’t been expecting this so he didn’t mind, especially since he was told there would be a phone they could all use to keep in contact with family and friends as long as they don’t give anything away in regards to the show.
Jason had been mistaken when he assumed they’d be living in a regular house. No, this place was a mansion with three stories. The outside was beautifully decorated with bright flowers and shrubs. The front door was made of glass that revealed a long black and white staircase. Inside were a huge all-white kitchen and a tan living room with what appeared to be a truly comfortable couch that he could not wait to sit on. Up the stairs were three bathrooms and six bedrooms. Before Jason could explore all of this though, a blonde female approached him with a clipboard in one hand a mic in the other. “Hi, you’re Jason right?” she asked, cheerfully. “Yeah, Jason Howard.” Nodding, she started to go over the rules and told him to head to the confessional first to introduce himself to the world. She then proceeded to hook him up to the mic, clipping the battery to his jeans, and gestured for him to head inside. Jason licked his lips and tightened the grip he had on his suitcase and took a step towards the door.
Deciding to put his things away first, Jason headed up the stairs and down the hall until he came upon a room with a sign marked ‘Sagittarius and Pisces’ and turned the knob. It wasn’t surprising to find that his roommate had already arrived – Jason is usually the last to arrive for almost everything. Shrugging, he entered the room and made a face when he realized there was only one bed. Shaking his head, he set his suitcase down and placed his backpack next to it before leaving the room and searching for the confessional.
Taking a deep breath, he sat down on the couch and dug his beanie out of his pocket and put it on in an attempt to hide his bedhead. He licked his lips before turning on the camera and smiling at it. “Hey world, I’m Jason Howard or otherwise the Pisces of the house. I’m probably the last, or close to last, to enter this mansion. Anyway, I’m from Wilmington, North Carolina, I’m twenty-three years old and I like making films.” Laughing, he gave a small shrug and then turned the camera off. He left the room then and made his way towards the living room before noting that everyone else was out on the patio. Remembering what Janelle said, he made a beeline for them instead.
“Hey guys,” he greeted them, “I’m Jason.”
