He said nothing more for a while, but as they reached the apartment, Micah spoke up. "Maybe she is...maybe you should go and talk to her?" he suggested, cocking an eyebrow at his brother. Of course he had no idea what was going on, but he knew his brother had a habit of jumping to conclusions sometimes. Or taking things the wrong way. But Darren was up, inside and slamming his bedroom door, before Micah had even gotten out of the car. Maybe not then...

Micah hardly noticed Jay as he sat in one of the chairs in the lounge, he stared absently out of the window, his phone tightly clutched in his hand before Jay's voice snapped him out of it. "What?" he frowned across at her. "Yeah, sure." his face softened as he shoved a DVD into the player, it was just the first one he grabbed but half of them belonged to Jay anyway so chances are it was one she liked. But he was distracted, silent. Staring out the window, sitting up a little straighter at any slightest noise.

How much of it's genetics?
The amount of pills I'm taking, counteracts the booze I'm drinking
No, I don't think that I can be fixed
And you can cry all you want to, I don't care how much
Tell me why, oh why are my genetics such a b***h?
And you can't keep my brother, and you won't ******** my friends!

Talk to her? Was his brother insane? Darren squinted at his phone for a while, just sort of playing with it and contemplating messaging her. She had to be home by now. Right? He could text her and ask. But she would probably just avoid him or leave the house to avoid him. It was time to step it up.

If he wanted to see her again, it was going to be now. He decided that was that, running out his room to take a shower. It took longer than it should have, and by the time that he emerged and got dressed, he was catching about a third of the way into a bad movie coming from the living room. Not another sound came from the apartment, just that movie and Darren's scuffling through the house. He changed back into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, playing with his damp hair and scuffling past his siblings in the living room.

Jay, who was sort of leaning on Micah, idly watching the movie for what was probably the third time in her life, glanced at Darren as he ran hurriedly around the apartment. "It's her, isn't it?" She murmured softly, and Darren stopped in his tracks to stare at her. Of course it was her. It couldn't be anyone, or anything else.

"Are you going to come back?"
She asked softly, and he gave her another look. Not if he could help it. Not if he had a choice. Jay curled back up against her brother, letting out a disappointed sigh. Whatever. It didn't matter anymore. Darren had left the apartment as this point, his car roaring to life and peeling out of the driveway.

"Micah..."
She started slowly. "Is anything ever going to be right again?"
All in my head again the nightmares I might hear
This is how we like to do it in the murder scene
All my tears pull me through hell again
We are young and we don't care.
I wake in the night and I pray that I've been dreaming there's nowhere to hide from this nightmare calling to me
We never wanted it to be this way.

Micah glanced over his shoulder at his brother. Of course he didn't want him to leave them. But if it was what made him happy...Micah didn't want his siblings to be unhappy anymore. He'd accept whatever made them happy, even if he didn't want to, regardless of how difficult it was.

His attention was then caught by Jay as she asked if anything would be alright. "Of course it is." he was surprised at how upbeat his voice sounded as he squeezed her gently. "It won't be the same, but it'll be okay." With that, he was suddenly on his feet, heading through to the kitchen. When he returned, he shoved a tub of ice cream into his sister's hands along with a couple spoons. He set down numerous sauces on the table and grinned across at her. "See." he smiled at her.

A knock at the door was certainly unexpected, and as normal...both siblings tensed, Cody muted the television and they listened. It seemed to last an age and slowly, her brother got to his feet and made his way to the kitchen window, peering through the slats in the blinds, he made his way across to the door. Of course he recognised that kid. Cody remembered every face, he had to.

"Can I help you?" he asked, leaning against the door frame as he looked Darren up and down. He'd already decided there was no way he was letting the teen in the house, but he thought he'd humour him for the time being. Charlten had moved to the windowsill and was staring out the tiny gap in the curtains, watching Darren and her brother.

Of course. Jaylin offered him a small smile, but didn't really respond to him. Her hand idly grabbed at the spoon and poked at the ice cream, playing with it before eating some. The enthusiasm wasn't all there. She knew everything was wrong, but would play this game as long as he would, she supposed. Until night fell, and either Dallas came back or had to be found. Again. Either way.

Jay shrugged and picked at the ice cream, poking one of the bottles of chocolate syrup with her toe. She stared at it for a moment, then snatched it up and tipped the nozzle of the bottle to pour some in her mouth. A chocolate grin started and she winked at her brother, then set the bottle down and took a bite of ice cream. Sugar overload. She shrugged in content with herself, turning her attention back to the gorefest. Boring. They knew nothing about real fear. She stretched, getting up to go to her room and snatch a few pills out of her bag. It was almost a small pharmacy in there. But she had to take them. All of them.

She moved out of sight of her brother, preferring to sit on the counter in the bathroom, gently tapping the syringe to her insulin and then sliding the tiny needle into her leg. Jay didn't flinch, so used to every other needle that had been jammed into her. She shoved her bag under the bathroom sink then sauntered back to the living room to smash herself up against her brother, playfully poking his side. "You're trying to put me in a coma." She teased gently and pushed the giant tub into his lap, tossing her spoon onto the table.

It didn't matter. The movie went on, and she jabbered about how dumb the lead was. But it wasn't the same. It wasn't the way it had been a few years back. Innocent, without any sort of lies or hurt between them. She moved, shifting herself to lay her head on her brother's lap. She hand rested on his knee, lightly poking at it as she talked. Idle, useless conversation. Anything to avoid what they needed to talk about.

So this was it. Darren didn't falter as, presumably, her brother came out. It was now or never. He didn't want to be that punk that came to the door, acting like an a**. Darren had been on the other side of the door so long, that he almost lost his bearings. What was he supposed to say? Dark eyes narrowed in thought, and he straightened his back.

"No, unless you know where Charlten is. I'm Darren."
His words were strong and steady, but his mind scattered in a thousand directions, like marbles dropped on freshly waxed floors. "Is she home?" He asked after a pause. Of course she was. Where was she going to go? She wasn't waiting for him back a state away. She had left, thinking he had left her. He shoved his hands into his pockets nervously, wishing he didn't feel like such a creep.

A light laugh passed his lips. "Well you shouldn't eat so much sugar then missus." he teased, a smile pulling at his lips as he looked at his sister. Of course it wasn't the same, and he knew she was talking, just to fill the silence. But Micah was happily going to let her, it was what they both needed, what their whole family needed. As she lay across his lap, he absent mindedly played with her hair, biting down on his lip as he watched the film and criticised it alongside his sister. He wouldn't talk about anything she didn't want to talk about.

Cody cocked an eyebrow. "I know who you are." his voice was crisp, sharp. He kept to the point. "I know exactly where Charlten is. And I also know she's upset, because of you." he crossed his arms across his chest. "I don't think you should see her any more." he said simply. He half expected a fight out of this kid. He looked him up and down, he could take him.

"Go home Darren." a small voice came from the hallway as Charlten ducked under her brother's arm and pulled the door open a little more. "Why are you even here? You should be with your family today." she looked tired, but soon her expression turned hard as she looked at him. She was a different person - whether it was because she was around her brother, whether it was because she was upset...maybe it was a mixture of both. But the two siblings stood and looked expectantly at Darren, before Charlten sighed and turned to go inside.

Why try to stay sober when I’m dying here
I feel the dream in me expire
and there’s no one left to blame it on

User ImageDarren's expression hardened. Was she really going to play that game? He didn't even want to begin to do this. But the idea that she was different, that maybe they had a chance, stuck in his head. "Wait, wait," he held up his hands defensively, agitated and upset that she was acting like he had done something horrible to her. "Tell me, what did I do? Huh? I took you to see things you would never get a chance to! I was going to show you a brand new life! Something special, anything you wanted. That was what the whole trip was about. I dared to have to take care of something at home, and suddenly I'm a bad person?" He was talking past her brother at this point, trying to yell at Charlten as she headed back towards the house.

"I'm done with them. For real this time. But I see this is how it is. No matter what I do, unless I'm perfect, you're going to run back here and tell everyone how much of a loser I am. I shouldn't have tried, huh? I shouldn't have assumed you were special! Fine!" He turned his attention back to Cody. "I won't even try again. I have three sisters, only a thousand times more stubborn. I have to deal with guys that are actual bastards who deserve this sort of treatment, and worse. I came back here to apologize, and make it better. But I see she doesn't want that. And neither do you, apparently. Fine. Hide her in a closet somewhere, no social life, nothing. Let her wither away, or maybe run away from you." His thoughts flickered to Jaylin and Dallas. One had run, and been presumed dead. The other, fading into the wallpaper and dying every time she took a breath.

Maybe he should be with his family. But he couldn't be stuck with them forever.

Why was he still rambling at this guy? He didn't care, and Charlten clearly wasn't interested. "It's usually me standing where you are. I wouldn't be standing here if your foolish sister didn't mean the world to me. But nothing I say is going to convince either of you." His shoulders slumped, and he almost considered backing away. He had made a huge a** of himself. He was still angry, upset, and wanted her for his own. But getting past big brother wasn't going to happen.

Charlten froze and listened to what Darren had to say, before whipping around and storming towards him. That fiery persona, that fearless streak, right back where it belonged. "You left me!" she shouted at him, staring up at him, her eyes narrowed and her nose wrinkled. "You ******** left me! Why couldn't you have just told me the truth? Why did you have to sneak off at stupid o'clock in the morning and make me think you just used me? Why didn't you just tell me, you idiot!" she shoved him. "Everyone leaves me!" she bit down on the inside of her cheek. "I thought you were special. I thought you were different. And then I woke up and you were gone. Do you have any idea how s**t that made me feel? You could have just told me! That would've been fine. But you had to go and be a d**k about it. Can you blame me for thinking that? What would you have thought? If I'd just disappeared while you were asleep?" she frowned at him and shook her head before disappearing back inside, not wanting him to see the tears glistening in her eyes. She genuinely thought he'd just upped and left after getting what he wanted.

Cody cocked an eyebrow and laughed slightly. "Drama queen." he muttered as he heard the kitchen door slam as Charlten stormed through the house. He seemed to study Darren a little longer. "Do you actually care for her that much?" he was sceptical, but he'd never seen his sister react like that...

User ImageWhat the hell was that? Darren was prepared for crazy, but she was completely irrational! Why were women so insane? At least the ones he usually dealt with learned how to listen! He ran his hands over his face, not even bothering to respond to her. He wanted to yell at her, remind her a thousand times over that he had left a note and she had just stormed off without even asking why he might have left. He knew she would just tell him to stay and it would be just as bad if he had told her. At least, that was what he reasoned. He shook his head slowly, left alone with Cody once more. Why was she so completely cracked? Everyone left her? Please. She knew nothing of being alone. At all.

He was taken aback when Cody spoke to him again, feeling a flush come to his face. "I wouldn't be here, risking an angry relative with a shotgun and a trigger finger if I didn't." He shoved his hands back into his pockets, feeling so foolish and sick at that moment. "Believe it or not, I didn't come here looking for a fight. Or...any of that. I should have stayed home and let her be angry at me. I think I made it worse, not like an angry little teenage girl scares me," Darren laughed shortly. "I have two of those at home." He shrugged, clearly uncomfortable.

"I should probably go, before she comes out here and wrings my neck. But...yeah. I didn't leave her. I came back. I always planned to come back. I just...bullshit to deal with. Balancing a family and a real life is hard." Darren shrugged again and turned towards his car. It hurt. The one person he had put hope in. And she was no different. Just as insane, and angry, and distrusting, and warped in the head. But he loved her none the less. She was his crazy, angry mess. Changing her to anything less would ruin her. Despite the bitterness that she left in him, he still was sick at the idea of leaving her alone.

Cody laughed, a humourless laugh. "Tell me about it. Looking after her is my life. No time for anything else." he muttered. It seemed as though he and Darren had a little in common, as much as it begrudged him to admit it. He didn't like him, and he didn't like the fact he seemed to be insistent on sticking around Charlten. He didn't like Charlten's reaction and the obvious fact of how much she cared for him. Cody was distrusting. And he had reason to be. But he made a foolish move anyway. "Why don't you go and talk to her? She'll only b***h all day otherwise." he muttered gruffly, stepping aside and motioning for Darren to step across the threshold.

User ImageHe was...letting him in? Darren hesitated. This could make or break everything. Maybe she needed space. Maybe he needed to talk to her. Oi. He ran his fingers through his hair nervously, then slowly approached. Fine. It was now or never, he supposed. Might as well either make it or break it, and not have it hanging in the air. Darren slowly moved around the house, uncomfortable. "Charlten? Come out, don't make me stand around here looking like an idiot...I do that on my own time." He murmured, and sort of grinned. A foolish, nervous grin. He paced the living room, then moved to the hallway, sticking close to the wall like he was in a spook house or something. Like something horrible was going to pop out. He didn't even know where she was.

"I'm sorry, okay? I should have told you. But...there's a lot you can't know just yet. Just like you have your secrets, your problems, I've got my own." Explaining his family in one night just wasn't the best idea, or even possible if you really thought about it. There was a lot to sift through, to fix, to make right again. He didn't have the time. Not now.

"I was afraid you'd run. That my life would be too much for you. Imagine, if you will, that your life at home is a raging battlefield, and you manage to escape. A beautiful haven, far from what you could dream of. Imagine that battle starts to creep towards your haven. What do you do? You defend it. You try to send the blood, the horror, the death, as far from your beautiful space as you can." He sounded like an idiot. Darren knew it. But there were no real words to apologize for what he had done. "I thought I was doing the right thing. I was trying to keep you...keep you with me, without you having to see what I live with on a daily basis. The last thing I wanted was my insane family ruining what we had. But it seems I did enough of that on my own. I'm sorry, okay? But deciding to hate me...deciding that because I messed up once and therefore am a bad person...that's not going to work. If you even want this to work, you'll have to accept how horridly human and full of flaws I am."

Cody remained close by, no way was he just going to leave the two of them to it. Hell no. He smirked to himself, listening to Darren try and talk Charlten out of the kitchen. He was finding the whole situation thoroughly amusing, though remained uninvolved.

Charlten wiped at the tears on her cheeks and took a deep breath. She smiled weakly at some of the explanations Darren was using. Slowly, she approached the door and pulled it open a tiny amount. Biting down on her lip she poked her head around the door. "Only if you accept me..." she mumbled quietly. Slowly, she stepped out into the hallway and leant across the wall that was opposite him, avoiding his gaze. "I want to get you know you. I don't want you to feel like you have to hide stuff from me. I'm not gonna run a mile. If this is gonna work then it's down to us, no one else, nothing else." she shrugged and played with the ends of her hair.

User ImageWoah. She...was actually going with it? Darren practically fell over. That was just strange to hear. It was unheard of. She actually was following his logic. Yes! It wasn't a complete failure. He tilted his head at her as she spoke, smiling coyly at her. "You think you were in this alone?" Darren responded quietly, shifting around to get closer to her. "Silly. I felt the need to hide things from you...because it was too soon. You have to understand...my family is really messed up. And if I don't explain them first, and in very small doses...they'll destroy you. I can't see that. I don't want them to smash you to pieces." He loved his family...but they weren't exactly the best to have around others. He thought of Rio and cringed. Jaylin had snapped that day. Completely snapped. He was terrified of if she went after Charlten. The fierce response might leave either girl dead.

Darren moved to her and in one swift motion hugged her tightly to him. "I would never do anything to hurt you. Or purposely lie to you." He rested his chin on the top of her head for a moment, then let go. "There is nothing you could say to me that could stop me caring about you, or make me hate you, or judge you in any way. If you knew the s**t that I've seen, what I've heard, what I've lived through--you couldn't find a situation where I could judge you for your past. It's your past. You can't control it. All you have is the present, because the future isn't promised at all." He shrugged and shoved his hands into his pocket. It was just recently that he had come to this conclusion. Shrugging off his family was one step. They were always going to need him, but he needed to have a real life once in a while. One where he could function and be a normal human being. Tomorrow wasn't set in stone.

"So...I tell you mine, you tell me yours. No more. No less. Okay? I don't push you, you don't push me. There are things I'm sworn to secrecy and will hold to the day I die."
Darren leaned against the wall, eyeing her, gauging her response.

She looked up at him, wanting to believe everything he said about never judging her and so on, but she just couldn't bring herself to accept it. But she kept quiet and simply smiled up at him. "Thanks." she muttered quietly, enjoying the sensation of his arms around her, being pressed up against his body. She couldn't help but think back to the night at the hotel...a small smile pulled at the corners of her lips, until she caught her brother's eye underneath Darren's arm and her face fell. She turned to face the other way and looked up at Darren. "We'll be good, won't we?" she muttered quietly, so that only Darren could hear her. She so badly wanted to believe it.
