Just a quick run-down on any rules which have had policy tweaks or that have been added. This post is the one to see if something has been recently changed.

Quote:
Due to recent events and an increasing number in Hangout Threads being created in the main forum, we've decided to enforce a somewhat different sales policy here in the Gaia Exchange. This policy change is put into effect to ensure that the Exchange community stays true to the concept from which it was originally born.

Hangout Threads have never been allowed in the Exchange, and so we are adjusting the guidelines for setting up threads.

Sales policy change

We've altered the general sales policy in the Rules & Guidelines.

The Exchange is for selling. - Any threads found to be doing anything other than this will be moved to more appropriate forums accordingly.

  • All sales must from now on be in the first post of a thread.
This means that if a thread has a group of people, all sales must still be in the first post, and you should not have multiple posts for each individual to maintain for a long period of time.

  • If the content surrounding the sale is so far greater than the sale itself, it does not belong in the Exchange.
All such threads will be moved out of the Exchange and into more suitable forums. This includes Hangout Threads, and these will be moved to the Friends Chat forum.

  • Users cannot have more than 1 active thread going.
This is to ensure that the forum does not get cluttered with repeat threads and threads with the very same intent, created by the very same user. Any such threads that are found to be repeat threads will be recycled immediately. Please bear in mind that intentionally creating multiple repeat threads is considered spam and will be treated as such with a warning.

If a thread's main intent is questionable and its focus is not selling, then it is not obvious enough and may be moved to a more appropriate forum.

If a thread has been moved to a different forum, but its content has been changed to better suit the rules and guidelines of the Exchange, we encourage users to PM a moderator to have it moved back into the Exchange.

As a reminder, we encourage users to report any and all misplaced threads through the Gaia report system.

Since this policy is new we ask that any new topics being created that do not follow this to be reported. Older topics will have a short period of time to make the necessary changes. If these changes are not happening after a couple days then please feel free to report them so that a moderator may look at it.

Thank you. ^__^

Item Proof policy change

Recently, it has come to our attention that our previous rule about sellers not being required to show proof of an item they were selling has caused much trolling, fighting and arguments amongst the users of the Exchange forum. Many have used this rule against users who have simply questioned the items' existence, causing pages upon pages and several reports of abuse, harassment, trolling, scamming, and spam from both sides involved.

We understand that users who are wishing to buy an item can avoid being scammed simply by making sure the item is placed into the trade. However, since this has moved beyond proving that a seller is not scamming, and has resulted in an increase of harassment, abuse, flaming and trolling, we have had to alter the rules.

Because of the abuse of this rule, it has been decided that all users make use of the inventory display feature while selling items of value** when asked for proof.

**Note: Items of value in terms of these rules include all non-store items or items that can be sold in the Game Item Exchange (bugs, fish, trash, tickets, etc).

In lieu of this change, any user who repeatedly or maliciously refuses to offer proof of an item being sold may receive a warning for trolling. All sellers are required to actually possess the item they are selling, so there should be no reason for why you can not do this.

Users asking for proof should not do so frivolously. If a user is found repeatedly asking others for proof in threads of items they do not have any intention of buying, they may also receive a warning.
In addition, screenshots of valuable items are not acceptable as means of proof in sales.

Quote:
Bumping Contests policy change

We have also altered the bumping policy of the Exchange forum. A number of bumping contests have in the past ended prematurely, or have been closed down, with no prize being given to the user with the highest number of bumps. This is no longer allowed.

All bumping contests must from now on be finite, and the contest will not be allowed to be conditional on the outcome of the item sale in the exchange. Meaning, if or when a user holds a bumping contest, there will be a winner regardless of item sold.

If you are having a bumping contest in an exchange thread, the moment the item is sold or you close/abandon the thread, whoever has made the most bumps is the default winner of said contest.

Failure to reward prizes at the end of a contest will be treated as scamming.

As a reminder; any user who is found making multiple threads to sell the same thing without ending previous ones will have their thread removed with a warning for spamming.

(Taken from Kava's announcement in Questions and Assistance, modified by Aquafire and Ambu for Exchange use)

This guide will help you know when to and when not to file a forum report. For severe things such as pornography or password scamming please attempt to contact an online moderator as soon as possible. If no online moderators are to be found online please send a PM to any active moderator (not on break).

How to NOT use the reporting system.
-----Do not use the reporting system to report yourself for pointless reasons. (Reporting your own misplaced topic is okay)
-----Do not use the reporting system to ask if we'll be your friends/give you items/do you a special favor/ask us a question.
-----Do not use the reporting system to share your personal opinion.
-----Do not use the reporting system to report very old (month-old for example) threads or posts unless the offense is severe such as pornography/graphic content, password scamming. Receiving hundreds of reports for threads from page 800 of the chatterbox is a complete waste of our time.
-----Do not use the reporting system to report cussing or swearing. Cursing and swearing are not, by themselves, a Terms of Service violation. Harassment, abuse, trolling or posting offensive material with cursing is different than reporting "he said the f-word." You should never report someone for saying the f word or the s word, for example.
-----Do not use the reporting system to report announcements or stickies. Now, if a user makes a Terms of Service violating post within an announcement or sticky, that post may be reported, but do not report the thread itself.

When to use which reporting button.
----- - To report posts. The violation must be in the post you report. Evidence may be given in the report that the violation is true if it is not so obvious, such as saying "it started a few pages back" or similar, but do not report a random post to report a post on the same thread or page.

----- - To report threads. Use this when the first post in a thread or the entire thread is in violation of the rules. For example, a thread clearly requesting an illegal exchange (such as to sell or buy a Gaia account), or a thread which is full of inappropriate pictures. For the Exchange, this can also be applied to "wrong forum" threads

----- Please use this button in PMs if another user has sent you a PM which violates our ToS. For continued harassment/abuse from the same user please instead report them using the "Harassment and Abuse" report form with all relevant information. Password scammers should be reported immediately to an online moderator. (Making a report of the PM and then contacting an online moderator to let them know you have done so is suitable.)

Reporting Hackings, Scams and Harassment/Abuse.
At the bottom of the Forum Index there are also three additional buttons:

-----[Report A Hacking] - Use this button to report a hacking. If you have been hacked, use this button. If you cannot access your account the best thing to do is to create a new account or use another account to report your own hacking. You need to do this as soon as you can and be as informative as possible. This will better help the moderators deal with your situation.
-----[Report A Scamming] - To report a scam. Use this to report a case in which you were scammed. If you see a thread that you think may be a scam, and have evidence to support your case, use the [Report Thread] button instead. The Report A Scamming button should be used if you yourself are scammed.
-----[Report Abuse or Harassment] - To report someone who is abusing or harassing you. Please do not use this button to report others being abused/harassed because the person you think is being harassed or abused may in fact not care at all, and situations like that are very hard to deal with. In other words, no middlemen.

REPORT SYSTEM ABUSE
The report system is for Terms of Service violations (which includes spam posts) and for thread moves only. Read the "do not" section of this post, and then reread it, and then read it again, so you don't get warned/banned for report abuse!

Also remember that
abuse of the reporting system will not be tolerated.

Also, to clear up some common misconceptions:

------ When you click the report button you need to fill out a form in order for the report to be sent. Clicking the button and then going back will not file a report. You don't have to worry about accidently clicking the button and sending off a blank report.
------ Getting reported doesn't mean something bad is going to happen to you. If you've done nothing wrong, nothing wrong will happen to you.
------ Accidentally filing a report will not get you banned, however you will be told to pay better attention and continuing to do so may result in a warning or ban.
------ Filing reports against things you honestly think are breaking the rules will not get you in trouble if it turns out that the post was not in violation. Warnings are only issued to users who continually make errors because they are not paying attention, or for users who are spamming the system with illegitimate reports.

When should I directly PM a dedicated moderator? Here are some examples:
-----Password Scams
-----Pornographic Images
-----Normal bots
-----People posting offensive images
-----People spamming off-site advertisement

If you want to contact a moderator directly for the above, or perhaps to ask a question or get clarification, to report something more complicated that doesn't fit into the above links, or to report a signature if you can't find a post of the user's to report, simply PM an online mod with a link to the user's profile. Make sure you title the PM something relevant so the mod knows it's not spam.

Remember, for emergencies always PM an ONLINE mod. If you cannot find an online moderator for your forum but have something urgent to report, find one from outside of your forum.

Buying and selling Gaian items with real money is not allowed and is a bannable offense for all parties involved.
Basically, Gaian gold & donations to Gaia are the only ways to get Gaian items. All Gaian items are copyrighted to Gaia Interactive, thus you are not allowed to make profit out of them, simply they don't actually belong to you.

This includes Gaia -> Runescape; Neopets -> WoW; Runescape -> Gaia; etc type trades for accounts, currency or items is NOT permitted. - Any sort of buying or selling of one online Gaming items/accounts/currency for another is not permitted on Gaia.

FAQ:

Q.What about Gaian gift certificates? Can I buy a Devil Tail with them if I give the other user the certificate number?
A. You cannot trade gift certificates to others in exchange for Gaia items. This follows the same line of reasoning as to why you cannot buy or sell Gaian items through such places as eBay. You are still attempting to purchase Gaian items for real money. This is a bannable offense.

Q. I don't see why you can't trade $200 for a halo though, if u look on ebay, you see digital magic cards, and Ragnarok Online items for sale, you pay the people on paypal, then you go into the game and they trade it to you.
A. You are not allowed trade $200 for a Halo for the same reason you not allowed to trade digital magic cards and Ragnarok Online items, they are copyrighted and they have a ToS that specifies users cannot sell their items.

Q. So you mean even though I paid gold for my items, they are not really mine?
A. They are yours to play with on Gaia, but not to sell them for money and make a profit. The items and everything else on gaia is copyrighted AniHQ.

Q. If someone in the MiniShops wanted to sell, for instance, a framed print of a PuriPet on eBay (assuming that it was the creator of puripets who wanted to sell them, that is) would there be any problem with that?
A. If he's the creator, he can sell them anywhere for anything he wanted. But he cannot sell them on Gaia for real money because he would be profiting and using space and bandwith here.

On the same note, buying and selling Neopet & other games items in Gaia is not allowed as well, it is illegal. Please continue reading to see their ToS paragraph about selling items.

I leave you with my favorite quote on the matter:
"koutoni"
Why on earth would someone offer $200 for something that's not even real?

If you see a thread or receive an offer through PM about selling or buying items for money, please contact a Moderator with the link and name of the user.

As for selling other sites items on Gaia, if you read our TOS, AND theirs, you'll find its against the rules:

You can display our pictures on your own personal web pages for your noncommercial and personal use ONLY, as long as you write either "Copyright 2003 Neopets, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used With Permission" or "(c) 2003 Neopets, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used With Permission"on EVERY page with our pictures and/or text and you link directly to us, but you can't pretend they are your own work. (By the way, this means that you can't sell ads, barter for stuff, offer your services, or otherwise earn money, Neopets' Items, or Neopoints either on web pages that contain our pictures and other Materials, or by using our pictures or other Materials, such as by offering to make Neopets banners or backgrounds for others.)

Many users will use user-wrapped gifts as a money game, offering to sell wrapped items for a certain price. These are NOT special items. ANYTHING can be in a wrapped gift box. It can be anything from a mummy mask to a face veil to a store item. When dealing with user-wrapped gifts please be careful.

All threads found in the Main Exchange that are selling the user-wrapped giftboxes will be moved to the Lotto/Money Games forum.

Gaia Wrapped Boxes:

- Pink Magical Giftbox - Found around the site upon event.

- Blue Magical Giftbox - Found around the site upon event.

- Brown Magical Giftbox - Found around the site upon event.

The "dangerous" Gift Boxes To Buy:
These are the boxes that are USER-WRAPPED, so you must beware.

It is only a scam when the user selling the giftbox makes a claim as to the item or it's value that is in the box, you buy it, and the item they claimed was in the box isnt or is not the value they claim.

Examples:
Quote:
"Selling Wrapped Giftbox! Item inside is worth at least 15k!!"
- The item inside turns out to be a Pimpin' Hat, store worth 15,555gold. This is not a scam.
Quote:
"10k for wrapped gift! Item is a cigarette"
- The item inside turns out to be a cigarette, store worth 500 gold. This is not a scam. - Even though the item was purchased for a lot more than the store worth, the user stated upfront what the item was.
Quote:
"5,000 gold for box! Worth is 10k, buy now!!!"
- The item inside turns out to be a peasant glove, store worth 95 gold. This is a scam. - The user lied about the value of the item. This should be reported.
Quote:
"10k for wrapped box, Kiki Kitty inside!!!"
- The item inside turns out to be a Long Blox, worth 100g in the store. This is a scam. - The user lied about the item that was inside, thus this is a scam and should be reported.

- If a thread is selling a wrapped box report it or PM an online Moderator Assistant and it will be moved to the Lotto/Money Games subforum.
