Common violations to avoid:

Flaming & trolling: Posts directed at another member which are hateful, abusive, or intentionally inflammatory are considered flaming. Making intentionally inflammatory or provocative posts to incite responses from other members is considered trolling.

Spam: Posts that are gibberish, off-topic, contain advertisements or begging, or have low or no content are considered spam. Please ensure that your posts are on topic and contain an appropriate amount of discussable content.

Art theft / Plagiarism: Claiming another person's work as your own or posting artwork that has been copied or traced from other people's artwork, or images created using other people's artwork without permission and credit is considered art theft. Art theft should be reported with a link to the original work.

Guidelines for Posting in Textiles and Crafts

Please read these guidelines and try to follow them, so that our Textiles and Crafts subforum is enjoyable for everyone who visits here. These guidelines are in accordance with the Terms of Service and Rules & Guidelines for Gaia, and this subforum still falls under the same Rules & Guidelines for Art Discussion.

Tips for Posting

  • Look Around First
As with all the forums, it helps a lot to read the rules, and then browse a few of the active threads on the first page to get a feel for the flow of the forum. The regulars will appreciate it greatly as well.

  • Do Not Request Ideas
It's fine if you want more ideas about one you already have, but please refrain from asking for ideas or patterns from scratch, especially if you ever want to take your crafting to a commercial level - copyright concerns and other legal issues will come into play, so it is best if all your ideas are original.

    examples:

GOOD "I want to make <item> for my significant other's <special occasion>, and have considered <a couple of gift ideas>; do you guys have any other ideas?"

BAD "I need ideas for my new knitting line and I haven't come up with anything of my own at all!"

  • Getting Help
Most people are happy to help when asked, but please keep these things in mind when requesting help:
Spelling - If no one can understand what you're saying, it will be very difficult to respond to you. So try your best to keep your questions literate.
Duplicate Threads - A previous thread may already exist that answers your question. This is another reason why it's a good idea to look around first and make sure your question hasn't already been covered.

  • Thread Necromancy
Do not bump/respond to threads over a month old - it clutters up the forum and may bring up old arguments. It's fine to make a new thread if you have something new to add to the discussion.

  • Bumps
This is a very slow discussion forum. There is no need to bump a post unless it is in danger of falling off the second page and has not been responded to. Otherwise, bumps/offtopic chatting is not permitted if you are just trying to keep a thread alive - please use the chatterbox for that kind of thread. Bumping is considered spam, and spamming can result in a warning against your account.

Threads That DO Belong in This Forum

These are some examples of threads that are acceptable discussion for this subforum.

  • Show and Tell
You're allowed to show images of your work in progress or finished pieces. However, if the design is by someone else, it is a good idea to have a footnote stating who the designer happens to be so if other people are interested in using the same pattern know where to find it.

  • Pattern Posting
Sharing commercially made patterns usually violates the designer's copyright. Only patterns of your own design can be posted, and you must understand that someone may use your pattern privately. It's a good idea to state with the pattern what your terms are in case they want to sell what they created.

    example

You are allowed to sell up to 10 of this design per year. Please do not copy or share patterns. I retain all rights.

  • Techniques/Tutorials/Help
If you find a new method of making something and you don't mind sharing, or if you run into a technical difficulty crafting an item feel free to make a thread related to it.

  • Discussion of a Specific Craft
As long as this sort of thread doesn't become a hangout thread, it's fine to discuss the finer points of your favorite craft with others of the same interest. No "official" titles please.

  • Business/Shop Talk
It is fine to ask for help setting up a shop on a place like etsy or your own store as long as a) no prices are being discussed and b) it's not just the promotion of your site but more related to how you would file taxes, filing copyright, etc.

Threads That DO NOT Belong in This Forum

  • Promotions
If you have a gallery or website to promote (link to for visitors), it should go in Promotions.

  • Shops
Selling artwork or graphics for Gaia gold and/or items belongs in Mini Shops and its respective subforums.

  • 2D Artwork
Post a single piece of 2D artwork for comments and critique in Picture Post.

  • Guru / Information Threads
Threads meant to display as much information as possible regarding a topic or where the point of the thread is to generate "ask questions, get answers" sessions regarding a topic. Do not make these kind of threads in this forum.

  • Low content / unstructured threads
Topics that are too general or can be answered by a simple "yes" or "no" lack discussable content. When asking a question please include enough specific detail to enable others to respond accurately.

Report Hacking, Scamming or Abuse & Harassment?

The Hacking, Scamming and Abuse or Harassment report forms can be found at the bottom of the forum index. When submitting a report, ensure that you fill out all fields and include as much relevant information as possible.

    Report A Hacking
Use this form to report a Hacking. Hacking, on Gaia Online, refers to the unauthorized access of an account by someone other than the account owner. In most typical hacking cases, an unauthorized person enters an account which does not belong to him or her and takes items or gold from the account, often changing the account information so that the original owner can no longer access his or her account.

    Report A Scamming
Use this form to report a Scamming. Scamming is when another member of Gaia takes your gold or items, or tries to take your gold or items, by making false promises of giving you rare items, get-rich-quick schemes, or by any other deceptive means. Scamming generally involves a situation in which two members of Gaia make an arrangement to trade gold, items, or a Gaia approved service (e.g. avatar art commission) with each other and then one of the parties involved in the arrangement fails to live up to his or her promise of an exchange.

    Report Abuse or Harassment
Use this form to report ongoing Abuse or Harassment. If you are reporting harassment or abuse that is occurring directly in a thread, please use the "Report This Post" button instead.
