Well I've been interested in lolita for awhile now and today when I was shopping I picked up two volumes of the gothic and lolita bible.I was looking through the books and now I have the urge to dress that way.The clothing is so expensive though and I wanna try to make my own. Both books came with patterns to make a few things..but sadly I don't know how to sew and lolita clothing is so detailed and beautiful. Can anyone give me tips on how to learn to sew? I know this isn't major...but it's important to me.

Enroll yourself in a class.

Get the Vogue sewing book. It covers everything.

Taking a class will also help.

My tip is use a machine. Hand sewing takes loads of time and you would have to be pretty gentle with it. As you are first starting out take it slow. Don't speed through it and expect your stitches to be perfect. Good Luck.

HOHOHO.

Try buying GosuRori.

It is ALL patterns.

Mostly.

And, really, do get the Vogue sewing book. It's helpful.

Machine sewing=much faster, easier, and... more expensive, due to the cost of a Machine. If you do get a machine, since you are new, don't spend too much. You don't really need to.

Read the manual.

Seriously. I don't care about "no one ever reads the manuals.." Read it.

Classes do help, but unless they are one-on-one, it's harder to learn. If you are a visual/reading learner, I'd go with just the book.

Stop, Patrick! You're scaring him!

As a start I wouldn't begin with sewing Lolita-clothes. I've tried it, and there are so many details and everything just has to be perfect to look good. I know that's what you want, but please start with a bag or a simple skirt or something.
It makes it so much easier to start and it really gives you self-confidence to see a finished piece of clothing or a bag that you've made all by yourself 4laugh .
There's nothing worse than beginning on a big and complicated thing and then can't get finished! Believe me, I've triede it!
So yea.. and then go to library and pick up books about sewing, but also "follow your heart". That was what I did, and now my friends are asking me to sew clothes for them whee
So..really really good luck! And enjoy it!

A bit of first-hand advice; double-check your body measurements against the Gothic&Lolita Bible patterns since they're one-size-only.
I'm a girls' XS in American size (and flat-chested), and even I had a tough time fitting into some of the items I made from those patterns sweatdrop Especially the Angelic Pretty ones... eep!

I really reccomend getting the GosuRori pattern books if you want to make a full Lolita dress. They're not as easy as the G&LB patterns, but they have more sizes (check the measurements near the back) and they fit more sizes of people 3nodding
