I'm not exactly sure how to explain it, but you have to use a needle and poke and tease the clay until it is textured enough.

Yes, how small are they? The detail is absolutely gorgeous. I'd only suggest making the "slice" slightly smaller maybe? But honestly, the way they are is probably perfect.

They are a little less than 1 inch across.
I'll try making smaller slices next time.

I think the plates could use some gloss to make it look like glass/ceramic. Other than that it's PERFECT

You can use a hard bristle toothbrush and get the same result with just a slightly more even pattern, works well with cookies as well. But these are amazing cakes, great job!

I use a brush with cookies and I've tried it with the cakes when I first started, but I don't think it makes as good or realistic of a texture for cakes as the technique I currently use does.
