.::.Welcome to Kawaii Clay Charms.::.
Happy 2011 Everyone biggrin
This is a place for gaian's who enjoy making cute clay creations to come and share their love, work, ideas, experience, and techniques. I recently discovered my LOVE of making cute and kawaii charms out of clay and want to share it with others. I know how frustrating it can be starting out and I want to help others get into this craft without getting discouraged lol so I hope to provide helpful and quick feed back to all who came by and post and chat.
Please feel free to post pictures of your work:
- to show what you've made
- if you want feedback
- if you want advice
.::Getting Started::.
So you wanna make clay creations? Awesome! Still a little fuzzy on what you need? No problem! I'm here to help xD I kind of had to figure some things out as I went and that was pretty frustrating so I'm putting together a list of tools you'll need to hopefully take away some of that beginner frustration sweatdrop The following is a list of basic clays and tools you'll need to get started.

1,Sculpey Clay (soft)
-i recommend the original for beginners because its soft and easy to mold. its also an oven bake clay so its will stay soft until you're ready to bake it. You can buy these in little colored blocks or in big boxes biggrin
Sculpey Blocks
Fimo Block
2. Acrylic Paints
- acrylic paints are easy to use and dry fast. they are wonderful when you're doing multiple coats of paint. they are also inexpensive and you can get them at any craft store, Walmart, etc.
3. Paint brushes
-any old paint brush will do just get varying sizes. I have a multi pack I got from Walmart that does the trick 4laugh and for those tiny little mouth details I'll let you in on my secret weapon...toothpicks! Yep toothpicks are great for tiny details 3nodding
4. Eyelets or bendable wires.
- eyelets are those little circles you see poking out from the tops of charms. you can buy them or make them out of wire. Both you can purchase at any craft store or in the craft aisle at Walmart (i like Walmart because they are cheaper rofl .
5. Jump rings
- jump rings are what you will be attaching to the eyelets. They are like connectors. They are little circle that will allow you to connect your charms to cell phone straps, bracelets, earrings, necklaces etc. Again you can get these are any craft store.
6.TLS
- Short for Translucent Liquid Sculpey. This is a liquid form or clay that acts as a bonding agent. Kind of like a glue to help hold those stubborn eyelets in place or fragile part of your clay creations. This is also doesn't harden until you bake it so remember to add this when you put in your eyelets!
7. Glue!!
- Okay so you cant' go wrong with a little extra reinforcement (or if you don't have TLS). I recommend embellishing glue because it's specifically made to hold jewels permanently in place through repeated washings. So its heavy duty glue. The brand i use is Aleene's Jewel-It and I got it at Joann's Crafts.
8. Pliers
- Needle Nose
-Wrapping/Round
- Cutter
9. Exacto Knife
- super helpful for cutting pieces of clay or trimming your creations!
- I recommend these. Just be careful they are sharp!
- You can also get plastic clay knives too in the clay aisle of craft stores 3nodding
10. Glaze!!!!
- Glaze is optional. It gives your pieces that shiny look and also a protective coating biggrin
11. Lanyards/Straps
- very helpful for attaching charms to cell phones, back packs, cameras etc.
- of course you don't have to includes these they just help to give an idea or what it would look like
12. Toothpicks
- again just a helpful easy simple tool to help you draw eyes, mouths, tiny details
- they are also good for carving in details too or smoothing rough patches down that are to small to get to with a finger!

.::Tips for Beginners::.
1. Practice practice practice!
- I can't stress this enough. No one is perfect the first time they do something.
- Don't get frustrated. Take your time. Believe me I am one of the most impatient people in the world. The more you do it the easier and faster it becomes to do :3
2. Ask question
- It never hurts to ask. I'll always answer your questions!
- Not sure what something is or where to get it? I'll do my best to help you find it.
.::Helpful books::.
- I've found that japanese clay books are really really helpful. Now, I know what your thinking.."I can't read japanese! You're crazy woman!!" Well, neither do I, however, these books have really easy to follow step by step diagrams and photos. If I can figure them out ANYONE can 3nodding
- Unfortuanally the only place I can find these books is on etsy and the prices and get kind of silly sweatdrop However, in the long run they're worth it. Just price check around. I'll post a link to the book so yall will know where to get them biggrin

I own this book and its really helpful and very easy to follow.
Its set up with images of the projects first and then a step by step break down of each project in the back.
It has lots of easy to follow step by step pictures.
You can find it here in Pomadour24's Craft Cafe
They are located under the Zakka/ Magazines section of her shop.
Her prices are pretty reasonable.

This is another craft book that I own which I also purchased off of Etsy.
These are more for making deco charms, boxes, accessories that are mostly food and sweets related.
You can find this one in Pomadour24's Craft Cafe as well.

I heart this book! It is full of wonderful deco ideas for ipod cases, compacts, game system cases, brushes, jars, etc.
It also has step by step photos rather than diagrams.
Another neat feature in this book is that is shows alot of techniques for getting sweets to look more real. Give them that "baked" look.
It also shows how to make different textures
This one I purchased from Beautifulworks' Shop
She's got lots of nice stuff but her prices can get a little high sweatdrop

This one isn't as hard to find.
You can get it virtually anywhere although you may have to order it.
Barns and Noble, Borders, Etsy, and ebay all carry this book.
I recommend buying it used just because it will save you money wink
It is full of wonderful techniques and advice. Awesome pastel dusting advice!!
- Contest for gold prizes
-Tutorials
- Gaia Weekly in thread spotlight
