I'll make sure to visit the stores...Looking at Joann's website though, they seem to have reasonable prices and interesting finds.

Sign up and get some coupons. Presidents Day sale, all strung beads are half off, as are Swarovski crystals. Juuust reading the mail flyer emotion_kirakira
Lol. You seem to love Joann's.

Yes I do. I love my co-workers, the customers, helping someone find that one thing they are looking for. Sure, there are bad days, I have had people throw things at me, call me names, and mutter under their breath. People who can be unreasonable, but if I let those days get to me, I wouldn't be there. biggrin

Do you mean as far as quality or as far as what there is?

Quality wise, we don't control that. But I can tell you from my own experience, Blue Moon products are all right. I like Darice best, but this is just me. You could always visit their websites for more selection!

And for what we have, it depends on the size of the store and location. There are two Joanns near me. The one near my house is tiny and their Jewelry selection is less to none. But the one I work at has a massive section. So, really, it depends on where you live. :3

According to my friend, who makes jewelry, Michael's has a somewhat better selection and much better prices than Joann's. It might vary a bit from store to store, but you'd probably be best scoping them both out in person, if you can. ^_~ She seems to rely on Michael's only for basic supplies, though -- she's found a few local bead stores (which is using the term "local" a little loosely, seeing as how it's at least a half hour's drive to the closest one), that she visits periodically for more unique things to use. On top of that, she buys from some artistic bead suppliers on Etsy, I believe. 3nodding

^ This. It also depends on location. The Michael's near me is messy and unorganized with their jewelry. I work at Jo-Ann's and the location I'm at is huge. Huuuuge. With lots to pick from. I don't understand why Michael's has no prices on their site...

Know what? I bet that the individual regions and even stores have more autonomy than most chains -- so prices probably vary by location. I know I've noticed that sometimes, the one near me will be having a sale but another one my friend lives near won't, or will have a different sale.

Also, regarding Joann's: that's where I go, not Michael's. I crochet, and the prices at the two stores are usually comparable -- though Michael's will have better sales and more of them -- but the selection at Joann's is MUCH more varied. It's the difference between settling for something that'll do in a pinch versus getting what I need (to an extent -- Joann's has more natural fibers, but the prices are ridiculous; the exact same skein of cotton yarn that I bought for $8 at Wal-Mart is $20 at Joann's). Also, I get the coupons in the mail, and drag my father along when I go -- he's a teacher, so he's worth an extra discount. xd

Yes location, state taxes, aka trying to steal every bit of money from the consumer that you can. >> Really, it can be ridiculous. But the home base for Jo-Ann is in Hudson, Ohio. I work in Virginia. So maybe the cost to ship it out a but further costs more? Who knows.

*_* What yarn is $20? The only yarn I can think of that comes ever remotely close is the Fisherman's Wool, which is like, $12. And Wal-Mart is a more consumer friendly store. They make the other places look bad with their low prices. But the one near me is always messy, and I can never find what I need. (I knit and use bamboo needles, all they sell are the cheap aluminum)

If you think Jo-Ann's has ridiculous prices, try going to stores that are not chain stores. They can really stick it to you there. D: But then, it's not really the stores doing the price thing, it's the company. I recently did a price increase on Red Heart yarns. It went up nearly 50 cents.

The cotton spool -- I think the brand is Sugar & Cream; it's available either in smallish balls of about 200 yards or large spools of 700-something yards. Ah, now I'm looking closer, the Wal-Mart brand is Peaches & Cream. Even so, they're both Canadian-made, worsted weight cotton. Go figure.

You're right on the needles, though -- I use aluminum hooks, no problem, but the Bates brand. The head's shaped differently than the cheap Boye hooks, and that seemed to be all the difference I needed. ^_^

*shudder* Gods, don't even... I'd have to drive an hour and a half to get to a city with multiple yarn stores. There's actually one shop in my general area (not convenient to me, just in the area), and I did venture down there to take a look. Granted, I wouldn't expect alpaca or angora or whatever else to be cheap, of course... even so, my jaw just about hit the floor. Beverly Hills prices -- and attitude, for that matter. They definitely weren't worried about attracting new customers. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Yeah, a big skein of cotton here is $10.99, $2.99 for the smaller ones. Honestly, I chalk that up to location. (I love Sugar and Cream, they even have scented yarn!)

I hate snooty yarn people. >> It's as if a younger generation, or anyone learning on something that isn't generic aren't welcome.

It's funny, the smaller skeins are still $2.99... which... that's about one and a half cents a yard... and the big ones are, what, about 700 yards? At $19.99, that's almost three cents a yard. But I kept double-checking the tag on the shelf to make sure that's what it was for, so I'm sure of that. Hehe -- but now that I've glanced at the website, I notice that's a "new product," and it's $13.99. rofl That's still more per yard than the small skeins!

... And I think I want to decorate my own bike like the one on the Joann's site... whee

*nods* I thought on that for awhile, because this place apparently has classes and things, so it's not like they don't want other people possibly learning the skill, but it occurred to me that since no one there (and there was a group; I think a class had just ended) had taught me, I must not be in the store to actually buy anything -- because obviously, if none of them had taught me, I couldn't possibly know what to do with yarn in the first place. Hm. Maybe I'll see if it's feasible to yarnbomb the place. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

I still can't figure out why they charge so much! D: Even the Bernat cotton yarn is $9.99- $10.99 for those big skeins!

Go for it, decorate your bike! I thought that was the coolest idea! XD (then send a pic!)

Everyone is set in their own way of doing things, and this is true with any craft. There are just those people who think if you don't learn the old fashioned way, you are wrong. Now, there is nothing wrong with their way of doing things, it's just everyone else is different. My mother and one of our teachers learned by reading a book. I learned a bit from my mom, then the internet, and now I do all sorts of things. <3 And you really should look into yarnbombs 3nodding

Always print some coupons before you go - makes things much more affordable, and with chain craft stores, usually they have at least a 40% off one non-sale item coupon.

Etsy sometimes has good deals, especially if you're buying more than one thing from the same person (since shipping is often less). If you want a lot of selection in one place, especially for beads made of real stone, try the Fire Mountain Gems website.
walmart?
For yarn I know is so much cheaper than Joann's, Micheal's or Hobby Lobby.
Thoses 3 are 20 mintues from my house.

The Lion Brand warehouse in in New Jersey an hour from my house. I haven't been but the warehouse prices are much cheaper than in stores.
